Frank heard tires screeching, then silence. He slowly opened his eyes expecting to see a car parked on top of him. Instead, he saw the front bumper just above his head. He knew he had been lucky. "Frank!" A moment later, he felt someone touch his arm. Turning his head, he saw Joe crouched beside him. Joe asked, "Are you all right?" Frank nodded his head and returned his focus on breathing regularly. He closed his eyes as Joe stood up. He listened as an engine was started and put in gear. When he reopened his eyes, he wasn’t surprised to see that Callie was beside him along with Joe. "Frank, are you hurt?" Callie asked. "I’m okay," he said quietly. "What happened?" Joe asked. "Help me up," Frank said ignoring Joe’s question. Joe and Callie each took one of his arms and slowly got him to an upright position. Frank held onto Joe’s arm trying to steady himself. He turned slightly and saw the black sports car was backed up from where he had fallen. He saw Melissa sitting in the drivers seat staring forward. "We should see if she’s all right," Frank said quietly. "I’ll do it," Joe said putting his hand in his pocket and pulling out his keys. He handed them to Callie. "Have him sit down in the van." "Got it," Callie said. As Joe made his way to Melissa, Frank allowed himself to be led to the van. Once Callie had the sliding side door open, he sat down on the floor and closed his eyes. He let out a breath and realized he was more shook up than he first thought. He felt someone sit beside him and knew it was Callie. He turned opening his eyes and gave her a small smile. "I’m okay." She reached up and brushed a lock of his brown hair back from his forehead. "Do you know what happened?" Frank took Callie’s hand and gave it a squeeze as he nodded his head. "Let’s wait for Joe to come back." He knew waiting would give him a chance to calm his nerves. "How are you doing?" Joe asked as he approached the van. Frank looked at his brother. "I could’ve lived without the fall." "Did you hurt your ribs more?" "I don’t think so. I just jarred them." "What happened?" "I saw someone on this side of the van crouched down. I came around the back and asked what the person was doing. The person ran at me and knocked me down." "Did you get a good look at the person?" Frank shook his head. "The person was wearing all black and I didn’t get a chance to see the face." He looked past Joe and saw Melissa standing by her car. "Is she all right?" Joe glanced over his shoulder then back at Frank. "She’s just a little shook up, but she’s fine." "What was the person doing?" Callie asked. "Whoever it was I saw was crouched by the front tire." Frank started to get up. "Stay put," Joe said putting a hand on his shoulder. "I’ll check it out." Frank ignored Joe’s gesture and slowly stood up wrapping his left arm around his ribs. He moved toward Joe who was crouched by the front tire exactly like the unnamed suspect. Frank asked, "What did you find?" "Someone shoved nails into our tires," Joe said looking up at him. "I’ll put the spare on so we don’t have an accident." "Why would someone do that to us?" Frank asked. "That’s what we’ll need to find out," Joe said straightening up. "We know our case isn’t over with yet." "That’s for sure." "Frank?" He turned quickly, instantly regretted the sudden movement and winced as he grabbed hold of Joe’s arm. As the pain subsided, he finished with the motion more slowly and saw Matt and Melissa standing there. Matt had his arm around Melissa’s shoulder. "Are you okay, Melissa?" Frank asked. "I was going to ask you that. But, I’m okay." "I’m no worse off." "What happened?" Melissa asked. "How did you end up falling into traffic?" "Someone pushed me. I’m just glad you’re okay." "I stopped as soon as I could," Melissa admitted. "It’s a good thing you did or Frank would’ve been a pancake," Joe said. "You’re right," Melissa said. "Come on, Melissa," Matt said. "I’ll drive you home. You’re in no condition to be behind the wheel." "But what about your car?" "I’ll have one of the guys bring it home. Come on. Let’s go." Melissa looked at them. "Bye Frank, Joe, Callie." "Bye," they chorused and Matt and Melissa were gone. "Let me get the spare then we can head home," Joe said. Frank stepped back from the van and waited as Joe changed the tire. He couldn’t understand what was going on and who was responsible for this incident and the other two. He knew that was what they needed to figure out.
