CHAPTER 24

Joe slowly stood up watching Matt carefully knowing he couldn’t trust him. "Matt, put the bat down."

"What are you doing going through the trunk of my car?" Matt slammed the trunk closed.

"Why don’t you tell me why you are doing this?" Joe countered.

"You think you’re so smart," Matt said. "But you’re nothing but an idiot. Now, get in the drivers seat. We’re going for a ride."

Joe shook his head. "I’m not going anywhere with you."

"You are."

"Matt, what’s going on?"

Joe looked and saw Melissa moving up behind Matt. He glanced at Matt and saw he dad not looked away from him. Matt said, "Melissa, go back inside."

"What are you two doing?" Melissa asked, confused. "You two are going to get into trouble."

"No we won’t," Matt said. "We need to take care of something. We’ll be back soon."

Joe knew Matt wasn’t kidding. He slowly moved past Melissa and climbed into the drivers seat as Matt slid in beside him. As he started the engine, Joe glanced at Melissa and saw the concerned look on her face. He was concerned too as he put the convertible in gear and headed out of the parking lot.

Frank leaned back in his chair as Mrs. Hedges continued lecturing about the different levels of government. He knew it was important to know this information, but he couldn’t concentrate.

Somewhere in the back of his mind, he knew who was responsible for all the incidents, but couldn’t put a name with it. He didn’t think it was a coincidence that Matt knew he had been injured and the thought that he was responsible didn’t seem farfetched, but he couldn’t understand the reason behind it.

A knocking on the classroom door interrupted his thoughts. Looking toward the door, he saw Melissa standing there.

"I apologize for interrupting, Mrs. Hedges, " Melissa said. "But Principal Cooper would like to see Frank right now."

Mrs. Hedges looked at him. "Frank, get going."

As he got to his feet, Frank grabbed his books. He made his way toward the door and stepped into the hall beside Melissa who closed the classroom door.

"Principal Cooper doesn’t want to see you," Melissa said quickly.

"Then why was I called out of class?"

"I think Joe’s in trouble."

"What do you mean?"

"I just saw Joe drive off with Matt in the convertible with Joe behind the wheel. Matt didn’t tell me what’s going on, but I have a bad feeling about it."

Frank stared at Melissa and realized she was being genuine. "Find Chet, Biff and Tony and have them meet me in the parking lot."

"What are you going to do?"

"Find them. Do you know where they went?"

Melissa shook her head. "I don’t know."

"That’s all right. Just find the others."

"Okay."

As Melissa headed off, Frank let out a breath. He didn’t like the turn of events. He made his way to the parking lot hoping the others would arrive quickly.

Joe glanced at Matt as he drove along Shore Road. He didn’t have a good feeling. "Matt, where are we going?"

"You just need to drive," Matt responded.

"Explain to me why you’re doing this?" Joe asked. "None of it makes sense."

"Maybe you’re not as smart as you make yourself out to be." Matt laughed.

Joe knew his gut instinct was correct that Matt was behind everything. "Matt, I don’t understand why. What did we ever do to you?"

Matt remained quiet. "Turn right at the next road."

Joe knew the road led to the cliff that overlooked the bay. He knew he had to be prepared for anything Matt had in mind.

"Stop," Matt said after Joe reached the top of the cliff. Once the convertible was stopped, Matt reached over and pulled the keys out of the ignition. "Get out."

"Matt this is ridiculous. Neither Frank nor I have ever done anything to hurt you."

"Get out!" Matt yelled.

Joe obeyed and climbed out of the car as Matt did. He watched Matt move around the front of the car still carrying the bat.

"You know, you two seem to think you’re so popular, but you’re not. You are nothing special. There is no reason for anyone to look up to you."

"Matt, are you jealous?"

"Yeah, right."

"You are," Joe stated. "You’re jealous of us."

"I’ll never be jealous," Matt stated.

"Then explain to me what you’re doing. Why did you drag me all the way up here? What’s the reason?"

"Do you really want to know what the problem is?"

"Enlighten me."

"You and Frank walk around this community as if you own it." Matt approached him slapping the bat into his left hand. Joe instinctively took a step back. "Everyone looks at you two as if you rule and everyone else is a lowly peasant."

"Where did you get an idea like that?" Joe asked taking another step back. He didn’t trust Matt at all.

"It’s so easy to see. Everyone always wants to be near you just because you do detective work. It’s not really a big deal."

"We don’t announce when we’re working on a case. Did you ever think that people like to hang out with us because they like us? Matt, where ever you got that idea, it’s just crazy."

"It’s the truth!" Matt yelled. "And it’s time you realized that."

Matt swung the bat at Joe forcing him back toward the cliff. Joe knew he needed to get away before he reached the edge and Matt pushed him over. He knew he was in danger.
