CHAPTER 24

Frank stood by the van waiting for Chet, Biff and Tony to get there. He didn’t like the news that Joe had driver off with Matt. Warning bells were going off in his head.

"What’s going on?" Biff asked as he quickly approached the van with Tony and Chet.

"Joe’s in trouble."

"How could Joe be in trouble here at school?" Tony asked.

"He’s not here. He took off with Matt."

"That shouldn’t be a problem," Chet said. "Matt’s a good guy."

"There’s something going on and I think Matt is involved," Frank said. "Joe and I were discussing it last night."

"Why do you think he’s in trouble?" Chet asked.

"Melissa pulled me out of class and told me they took off. Joe felt Matt was behind the students and since they left together, I have a feeling he’s right. We need to find them."

"Should we split up?" Biff asked.

Frank nodded. "We’re better off that way. We’ll keep contact by phone. I’ll take the van."

"Are you sure you should be driving?" Tony asked. "You’re barely moving as it is."

"We need to split up and I’m not going to sit here."

"All right," Chet said. "I’ll head into town."

"I’ll take Shore Road heading north," Frank said.

"I’ll go west," Tony said.

"I’ll go south," Biff said.

"If you find them, call me right away."

"Got it," they chorused and headed for their vehicles.

As Frank slid into the drivers seat of the van, he hoped he would find Joe before anything happened.

Half an hour later, Frank was getting discouraged that there was no sign of his brother or Matt. He turned the van toward the cliffs hoping he wouldn’t find anything there, but also hoping he would.

As the van approached the cliff, Frank saw a black convertible at the top. He also noticed two people up there also. One had blonde hair. Joe, Frank thought. He pushed the gas pedal to the floor wanted to get to his brother as fast as he could before anything happened. Pulling the van beside the convertible, he saw Matt swing the baseball bat at Joe. Joe was backpedaling toward the edge, getting closer with each step.

Stopping the van, Frank knew he needed to help Joe. Pushing the door open, Frank quickly climbed out ignoring the pain radiating from his ribs. He knew that didn’t matter. He had to protect Joe.

He made his way quickly, but quietly, hoping to surprise Matt. He kept an eye on them and watched Matt hit Joe with a glancing blow on the side of his head and Joe fall to the ground.

"NO!" Frank yelled eliminating the element of surprise.

Matt spun around to face Frank swinging the bat in the process. Frank quickly ducked and easily tackled Matt making them both fall to the ground. Matt slipped out of Frank’s grasp and quickly got to his feet tightening his hold on the bat.

"You shouldn’t be here!" Matt yelled.

"Why are you doing this?" Frank asked. "What have we ever done to you?"

"You have to ask?"

"None of this makes sense." Frank struggled to his feet. "What did we do to you?"

"You two act as if you are so much better than the rest of us. You two don’t have any consideration for the rest of us."

Frank listened to Matt rave and couldn’t understand what he was talking about. A glance at his brother and he realized Joe was still out of it.

"Matt, you’re not making sense. What is it that we’ve done to make you want to purposely hurt us?"

"You two deserve to pay for everything," Matt said. "And you will pay."

Without warning, Matt swung the bat hitting Frank in the ribs knocking the breath out of him and making him see stars. Frank couldn’t stay on his feet. His knees buckled and he fell to the ground. He couldn’t catch his breath. The pain was unbearable.

"You’ll pay for how you’ve treated everyone!"

Frank looked up in just enough time to see Matt swinging his foot at him. Frank was in too much pain to move. Matt kicked him in the ribs. As the pain took over, Frank watched Matt lift the bat over his head. It was the last thing he saw.
