A week later, Frank was still in the
hospital. Following surgery, he had been on a ventilator to give his lung a
chance to heal and the day before it had been removed. Frank was still
sore, but feeling better as time passed. He knew he would be in the
hospital for a few more days to make sure no complications set in.
The door to the room opened and Joe walked in carrying his backpack. He moved over to the bed and settled in the chair beside it. Frank was looking forward to this visit because he was finally able to question his brother about what happened. His memories were a little fuzzy after arriving at the top of the cliff. "How are you feeling?" Joe asked. "Better," Frank whispered, his voice scratchy. "Fill me in on everything." "Where do you want me to start?" "How did you end up on the cliff?" Frank asked softly. "Well, I started by checking out Matt’s car. I figured he was up too something and wanted proof for you. He caught me there, which you probably guessed. He was ranting and raving and ordered me to drive to the cliff." "Why didn’t you just walk away?" "I didn’t trust him. He had a baseball bat and wasn’t sure what he would do if I turned my back on him. So, when we reached the top of the cliff, he took the keys and ordered me out of the car. He kept claiming we were going to pay. He didn’t make much sense." "Was he jealous?" "I believe so. I don’t really know why, but he seemed to think we acted as if we are better than everyone else and I know that isn’t true." "He was jealous," Frank stated touching his throat. "Where is Matt now?" "At the state mental hospital. He broke down at the police station and was sent there. From what I’ve heard, I think he’ll be there a long time." "So," Frank swallowed gingerly. "Matt was trying to get even with us because he thought we were perfect." "Pretty much." "That’s a shame that he thought that way, but at least he won’t be able to hurt us anymore." "That’s true." Joe smiled. "Now, onto a more important topic." "What’s that?" Joe lifted his backpack and set it on the foot of Frank’s bed. He unzipped the bag and reached inside. Frank watched as Joe pulled out several books and set them on the table at the foot of the bed. "I didn’t think you’d want to get behind on your homework with just a little more than a month of school left. I also got your assignments." Joe pushed the table up to him. Frank picked up the pages and scanned them realizing it wouldn’t take long for him to get the work done. "Thanks," Frank said flipping through the pages. He stopped and looked at one closely. He turned his gaze to Joe, who was looking everywhere, but at him. "Joe?" "Yeah?" Joe looked at him. "Why do I have a history assignment in here for you?" "Oh, is it in there?" Joe asked, innocently. "Yes, it is." Frank pulled it out and handed it to Joe. "I think you’ll need this to do your paper." "Thanks." "You’re welcome." Frank smiled at Joe and realized their lives would soon be back to normal, if they could call their lives normal.
