CHAPTER 18

"Nancy!" Frank and Ned yelled in unison as soon as she hit the ground. They raced across the field to second base just as Joe reached her.

Nancy was moving her head as they positioned themselves by her side. A large bump began to swell on her forehead and turn beet red.

"Nancy, are you okay?" Ned asked quietly.

Nancy closed her eyes and nodded her head slightly. Wincing with pain, she put her hand to her forehead and tried to sit up. Ned put his arm around her shoulder and helped her to a sitting position. She slowly opened her eyes and could see all the worried faces surrounding her. But as she looked toward home plate, she could see Misty with a big smile on her face. Nancy watched as Misty looked over toward the other bench and give a thumbs up sign to someone there. Nancy couldn’t see who it was on the bench, but figured it wouldn’t be too hard to find out.

"Can you get up?" Frank asked breaking into her thoughts.

"I think so," Nancy said and Ned helped her to her feet.

He kept his arm around her waist as he helped her back to the bench. Nancy sat down and took a deep breath. She felt a dull throbbing in her head and was glad she wasn’t seriously hurt.

George came up to Nancy and said, "I’ll take your place if you want."

"I think you should," Nancy said.

"Okay," George said and headed out to second base.

Ned kneeled in front of her and lifted her chin with his right hand,. "Are you sure you’re all right?"

"I’ll be fine," Nancy said as someone handed her an ice pack from the first-aid kit. She place the pack against her forehead and closed her eyes.

As she sat there, she heard the game resume. After a few minutes, she opened her eyes. She saw her teammates out on the field waiting for the other team to bat. She turned her head and saw Frank sitting beside her. He turned his head and asked, "How are you feeling?"

"All right," Nancy said glancing around. "Let’s move out of the sun."

Frank nodded. They went to the trees beside the bleachers and had a seat under the trees. Frank slid his sunglasses off. He said, "You’ve got something, don’t you?"

"I think Misty is involved," Nancy said after making sure no one was close enough to hear what they were saying. "She aimed that ball at me on purpose."

"Are you sure?" Frank asked raising an eyebrow. "I find that a little hard to believe."

"She was out of her cabin the night I was attacked as was Allan." Nancy sighed. "I’m pretty sure Derek isn’t involved after his outburst yesterday."

"What outburst?"

Nancy told him how Derek confronted Ned and accused him of playing favorites. Nancy finished by saying, "Derek needs this job to pay for college and it gives him plenty of experience."

"But then who is involved?" Frank asked looking out at the diamond. "I know you think Misty is, but what reason could she have?"

"I don’t know, but she’s not working on her own. She’s working with someone."

"Why don’t we set a trap."

"What kind of trap?"

"I don’t know. Yet," Frank said with a smile.

The two of them watched the rest of the game from the shade of the tree. When it was finally over, their team had won by four runs. As the counselors and campers headed for the dining hall, Ned came over to Nancy and Frank with Joe and George.

Ned sat beside Nancy and asked, "How’s your head?"

"How does it look?" Nancy asked.

"She’ll be fine if she’s making jokes," Joe said sitting down next to Frank.

Steve came over to them and knelt down. "It certainly has been a couple rough days for you, hasn’t it," Steve said as he examined Nancy’s bump.

"It sure as," Frank said touching his head gingerly.

"Steve, can I ask you something?" Nancy asked wincing slightly as he touched the bruise.

"Sure," Steve answered.

"Did you talk to Misty or Allan on the night I was attacked?"

"Yeah," Steve said. "They showed up at the administration cabin after Ned turned in."

"Did either of them seem out of breath?" Nancy asked.

"No," Steve said. He looked at Nancy. "You’re trying to find who attacked you, aren’t you?"

"Someone attacked me and I want to know why," Nancy said angrily.

"Ned told me about your detective work, but I think you should forget about this," Steve said. "I’m sure whoever attacked you is long gone by now."

"Or they’re still here at camp," Nancy said quietly.

"Do you think one of the counselors attacked you?"

"It’s possible," Nancy said.

"Steve, you showed me the papers about the damage here at camp," Ned said. "It’s obvious someone doesn’t want this place to last."

"Wait a second," Frank interrupted. "Am I missing something? What’s this about damage?"

"There have been lots of little things." Nancy explained to Frank, Joe and George about the list Ned had given her.

"Steve," Frank said. "What would happen to this place if something happened to you or if the camp was closed?"

"The land would be given to Allan if something happened to me," Steve said. "But if the camp closed, I don’t know, maybe sell the land."

"Allan?" Nancy asked.

"Why him?" Ned asked.

"Allan’s my nephew. His mother was my sister, Maureen, she died shortly after he was born. I took Allan in after his father died in a car accident when he was 14," Steve said. "Everything would got to Allan since he’s my only living relative."

"But why would Allan destroy something that will someday be his?" Ned asked.

Frank looked at Steve. "Were you very close to your sister?"

"We weren’t close after she got married. I wasn’t supportive. I didn’t trust Allan’s father. When my sister died, I was heartbroken. We only had each other and she was gone. Allan’s father blamed her death on me. I also blamed myself. When she got married, I spoke my mind. I told her she wasn’t marrying the right guy. We fought about it. And after that fight, we never spoke again. We never got the chance to make amends. She died before we could reconcile our differences. Allan’s father was also an only child, so when the drunk driver hit his father’s car head on and he died, Allan came to live with me."

Frank had a theory, but he needed to talk it over with Nancy before they went any farther.

Steve asked, "Is there anything else?"

"No," Frank said. "I think that’s it."

"All right," Steve said getting to his feet. "Don’t forget your campers in the dining hall."

"We’ll be there in a few minutes," Frank said as Steve walked away.

When they were alone, Nancy smiled at Frank and asked, "What is it?"

"Before you thought Misty was involved, but I think it’s Allan."

"Why?" Ned asked.

"Think about what Steve told us. Allan is his nephew. Steve and his sister had problems and she died. Allan’s father blamed Steve for her death and I bet Allan’s father passed that hatred down to Allan."

"So, Allan wanted to ruin Steve’s life because in his eyes, Steve killed his mother," Nancy finished.

"Wow," Ned said. "And I thought we’d gotten away from mysteries."

"But that still doesn’t explain why Nancy was attacked," George said.

"Actually, it does," Frank said.

"What do you mean?" Joe asked.

"Remember the night before the campers arrived when all the counselors were sitting around the campfire," Frank said.

"Allan did seem a little surprised when Bess said we were detectives," Nancy said.

"You’re right," George said.

"But that doesn’t mean anything," Joe said. "A lot of people are surprised when they find out we’re detectives."

"Think of it this way," Frank began. "Suppose you planned to ruin someone’s livelihood by sabotage. But in the middle of your plans, you find out there are detectives around."

"If it was me, I’d stop the sabotage until the detectives left," Joe said.

"But what if the detectives don’t leave?" Nancy asked.

"You get rid of them," Joe said with understanding.

"But the only person who has been attacked it Nancy," George said.

"Maybe whoever is behind this thought I was vulnerable because I am a girl," Nancy said.

"We need proof before we go to Steve," Frank said.

"Speaking of Steve," Ned said glancing at his watch. "We better get up to the dining hall before Steve sends out a search party."

"You’re right," George said getting to her feet.

They all started off toward the dining hall. When they reached the path leading to boys camp, Frank said, "I’m going to get some rest. We’ll come up with a plan later."

"I’ll stop back and wake you for dinner," Joe said.

"Thanks," Frank said with a wave as he walked to his cabin. Once inside, he was surprised to see Jamie sitting cross-legged on his bed. He had on a red camp T-shirt. "Why aren’t you at the dining hall?"

"I wanted to be alone," Jamie said sullenly staring at his bunk.

Frank sat down on Jamie’s bunk and said, "Tell me what’s wrong."

Jamie quickly got to his feet. He said quickly, "Nothing. I’m going to the dining hall."

"Jamie, if you want to talk, you know where to find me."

"Okay," Jamie said and ran out of the cabin.

Frank went over to his bunk, slid off his baseball cap and tossed it onto his suitcase. He sat down on his bed and leaned back with his head on his pillow. As he closed his eyes, he wondered if Jamie was all right. Jamie seemed to be worried about something, but he couldn’t figure it out as he drifted to sleep.
