Nancy walked into the dining hall with George, Ned and Joe. Ned and Joe headed into the kitchen to get drinks for them and the girls while the girls joined Bess who was sitting with Misty. As they sat down, Bess asked, "Are you all right, Nancy?" "I’m fine." "I’m sorry I hit you," Misty said sarcastically. "Maybe if you had ducked, you wouldn’t have gotten hurt." Nancy saw Ned and Joe coming toward the table and said accusingly, "I don’t think you’re sorry. You hit that ball at me on purpose." "Now why would I do a thing like that?" Misty asked with a smile. "Why would you do what?" Ned asked as he reached the table. "Your girlfriend seems to think I hit the ball at her on purpose," Misty said angrily. "Well, did you?" Joe asked innocently. "You people are nuts," Misty said rising to her feet. "There’s always a chance of getting hurt when you play any sport." "But you weren’t too concerned when Nancy hit the ground," Ned added. "You don’t know anything," Misty sneered as she stormed out of the dining hall. Ned and Joe sat down at the table as Bess asked, "What was that all about?" Nancy said, "We think we know who is behind some of the things happening at camp, but we’re not sure." "Who?" Bess asked. "Never mind," George said. "I won’t let it slip," Bess said. "We know you won’t, but we can’t spill the beans unless we have proof," Nancy said. "I understand," Bess said. "By the way, where’s Frank?" "Back in his cabin resting," Joe answered. "He was only allowed to come back to camp as long as he promised to rest." "At least he’s all right," Bess said. "That’s true," Joe said glancing at his watch. "Sorry, guys, but I need to get to the basketball court. I promised some kids some pointers on shooting." "Maybe I should come along," George said with a smile. "Just to make sure they know the right way to shoot." "Just wait," Joe said getting to his feet. "We still have to finish our game." "Are you sure you want to finish? I mean, if you want to forfeit, I understand." "Never," Joe said and the two of them left the dining hall, arguing playfully. "Have you any ideas on how to catch the saboteur?" Ned asked after a few minutes of silence. Nancy shook her head. "Nothing yet. But I will think of something." "Here comes Steve," Bess said. "Hey guys," Steve said sitting down beside Ned. "Hey Steve," Nancy said. "Ned, I need these notices take to each cabin or given to the counselors to be posted," Steve said handing Ned a pile of papers. "These are sign-up sheets for the talent show." "Talent show?" Bess asked. "Sure," Steve said. "It’s one of the highlights of the summer. Counselors and campers can participate. You can sing or dance, do a skit or comedy routine. Anything at all." "That sounds like fun," Bess said. "Everyone seems to enjoy it." Steve stood up. "Make sure all the counselors get one." "Yes sir," Ned said with a mock salute and Steve left the table laughing. "Well, I guess someone needs to stop playing games and get back to work," Nancy teased with a smile. "Yeah," Ned said glancing at the stack of papers. "I guess I’ll see you later." He looked directly at Nancy. "Take it easy, please." "I will," Nancy promised as Ned left. "The talent show sounds like fun," Bess said and Nancy looked at her. "It sure does." "Maybe George would like to do a skit with us," Bess suggested. "Remember that song and dance we did for the school talent show?" Bess nodded. "Why don’t we do that." "That would be a lot of fun," Bess said smiling. "But do you have the music?" "No, but I can get it. I’ll have my Dad send it up." "Will you have it in time?" "I’m going to call him right now." Nancy left the dining hall and headed over to the administration cabin. She opened the door and saw no one in the front office. The door to Steve’s office was open and the phone was on his desk. She picked up the phone and dialed. A moment later she heard a deep voice say, "Hello?" It was her father, well-known attorney Carson Drew." "Hi Dad." "Nancy! It’s so good to hear from you. How are you and how are things at camp?" I’m fine and things are interesting," Nancy replied cradling the receiver on her shoulder as she looked at the pictures hanging all over the wall of Steve’s office. "This is really a lot of fun." "I hope you’re keeping a close eye on the kids." "I am," she paused. "Dad, there’s a reason I called." "Don’t tell me you got mixed up on a case." "I did." Nancy explained to her father the things that had happened since their arrival at camp. She looked over at the front door before continuing. "I need you to do a background check on a couple people if it’s possible." "What are there names?" "Allan Stern, Misty Allen and Steve Walker." "Isn’t Steve the one running the camp?" "Yes, he is, but I want to make sure he’s not involved. Also check the name Derek Marks." "I’ll get that information to you as soon as possible." "Thanks, Dad, and when you call back, give the information to Ned, no one else." "All right," Carson said. "Is there anything else?" "Yes, there is," Nancy laughed. "The real reason I called is that I need some music from my room and I need it as soon as possible." "What is it?" "It’s Melissa Michaels ‘Let’s Party Forever’." "I’ll mail it out today." "Thanks, Dad." "You’re welcome. Just be careful." "I promise. Bye." "Bye, Nancy." Nancy hung up the phone and was headed out of Steve’s office when she saw a picture of Steve and Allan by the door. Allan had on a bright green baseball shirt and hat and a black pair of shorts. The picture cut off at his knees so she wasn’t able to tell if he was wearing green sneakers or not. At that moment the front door opened and Steve walked in. Steve saw Nancy and asked, "What are you doing here?" "I’m sorry, Steve. I had to call my dad to get some music for me. Bess, George and I decided to perform in the talent show and I needed the music. Ned told me I could use the phone." "Were you able to get through?" Steve asked walking into his office and scanning his desktop suspiciously. "The lines weren’t working well earlier." "Yes I did and thanks for the phone. I guess I’ll see you later." "Bye," Steve said and she left the administration cabin. ***** After supper, Nancy was standing by the campfire watching the flames flicker. Most of the campers were singing songs or telling ghost stories. She was about to head down to the lake when she saw Ned walking toward her. "Nancy," Ned called coming closer. "I just received some paperwork from your father. He asked you to review it." Nancy took the papers from Ned’s outstretched hand. There were four paper folded in half. She looked at Ned, puzzled. "Did you read these?" "No," Ned said. "Your dad called before he faxed the pages and told me to fold them and get them to you as soon as possible." Nancy started to unfold the papers. Nancy looked at the first paper. It was the background check on Misty she had requested. According to this, Misty had grown up in Chicago. She was in college studying to be a physical therapist. She had no outstanding debts. In fact, nothing really caught Nancy’s eye. "Nancy," Ned said breaking into her thoughts. She looked at him. "You might want to do that where there aren’t so many people." "Good idea," Nancy said looking embarrassed. She folded the papers back up and slid them into her inside jacket pocket. "I’m going to head down to the dock." "Why so far away or is there something you don’t want me to know?" Ned teased. Nancy wasn’t sure how she could tell Ned she had checked up on his new boss. "No," Nancy lied. "I just asked Dad for some background information on our suspects and this is what he was able to dig up." "Ned!" a voice yelled from across the campfire. It was Steve and he was motioning for Ned to come over. "Be right there!" Ned yelled and turned to Nancy. "Let me know what you found out. And be careful." "I will." As Ned walked across the fire pit area, Nancy let out a breath. She hated keeping things from Ned, but she knew he would explode if he learned she was checking out his boss. She headed down the pathway toward the dock. As she walked along the twisting path, she noticed how dark it had gotten. She pulled Ned’s flashlight out of her pocket and turned it on. She knew he worried about her after her attack and wanted to make sure she had a flashlight since hers was broken. After she passed the path leading to the baseball diamond, she saw someone coming toward her from the lake. When she was closer, she realized it was Frank. "Hi, Frank," Nancy said. "What are you doing out and about? Shouldn’t you be resting?" "Hi yourself," Frank said stopping in front of her. "I couldn’t sleep anymore if I wanted to. So, where are you heading?" "Down to the lake. I knew no one would be down there and I wanted some privacy. Why don’t you come with me." The two of them walked down to the lake in silence. They were almost past the boathouse when they saw someone run from the dock toward the basketball court. The person was wearing dark clothes and a pair of bright green sneakers glowed in the moonlight. "That’s my attacker!" Nancy shouted. |
