Nancy started running after the person. "I’m right behind you!" Frank yelled. Nancy saw the person turn away from the basketball court and head toward boys camp. Rules, or no rules, she thought, I’m not letting them get away. She pushed herself to run faster and catch the person. The shadowy figure started to swerve between the boys cabins. The person knows where everything is, Nancy thought to herself. Whoever it was wore a black ski mask. They caught a glimpse of it as they passed one of the cabins with lights on. Frank caught up to her and Nancy asked, "Do you know where we are heading?" "There’s an entrance to the main trail up ahead," Frank panted. Just as Frank predicted, the person ran onto the trail and disappeared. Frank and Nancy stopped where the trail entrance connected and listened for any movement in the woods. There was only silence. "We lost him," Nancy said looking around. "Him?" Frank asked. "I’m not sure," Nancy said. "I just assumed." "I wonder what the person was doing on the docks anyway?" Frank asked putting his hands on his knees to catch his breath. "I don’t know, but we need to find out," Nancy said looking at Frank. "You ready to go?" "Yeah," Frank said straightening up. "Just don’t tell Joe I was running. He’ll flip." "All right. Let’s go." The two of them walked back to the dock. Using their flashlights they examined the dock for any signs of sabotage. After an hour of checking, they came up with nothing. Nancy and Frank sat down on the dock. Nancy pulled out the papers from her pocket and handed two sheets to Frank. After a few minutes, Frank said, "Derek and Steve seem to be clean. Everything Steve said about Allan is here." "Yes, but what Steve said about Allan may be just what he knows." "What are you talking about?" "It seems as though Allan has been in some trouble with the law," Nancy said handing the paper to Frank. "Allan has been charged several times with assault." "But he’s never been convicted," Frank said. "It looks like each time there was a plea deal." "What about Misty?" "Same as Allan," Nancy said. "I glanced at it earlier, but now I noticed the charges of assault. The dates are the same as Allan’s." "You know, I get this feeling Allan and Misty are dating and know one another a lot better than they let on." "I think so too," Nancy said glancing at her watch. "We better get to the campfire." "You’re right," Frank said getting to his feet. "We can check to see if the two of them were by the campfire all evening too." "Good idea." ***** When they got to the campfire, the kids were still singing. Nancy saw Ned standing behind a group of older kids and headed toward him while Frank went in search of Joe. Nancy walked up to Ned and tapped his shoulder. "May I have a word with you?" "Sure," he said and followed her away from the fire. Once they were far enough away from the fire so they wouldn’t be overheard, Nancy asked, "Have you seen Allan or Misty?" "No, I haven’t." Ned looked back at the fire. "In fact, I haven’t seen them all evening." "We need to find them," Nancy said quickly looking around. "What happened?" "I saw my attacker." "Who is it? Did you catch ‘em?" "The person got away," Nancy said. She decided to keep her promise to Frank. "I followed the person through boys camp and lost whoever it was when they hit the trail." "Were you able to identify the person at all?" "No," Nancy answered shaking her head. She pulled several papers out of her pocket and handed them to Ned. "Misty and Allan have a criminal record." "You’re kidding, right?" "They both have been charged with assault, but somehow managed plea deals, so they weren’t convicted on those charges." At that moment Steve came walking toward them. Steve said, "Isn’t this a perfect evening." "Definitely," Nancy said. "Steve, have you seen Allan tonight? I was going to ask him to give me some pointers on trail hiking." "He’s already in bed," Steve answered. "He was having a migraine, so he went to get some sleep." "Oh, well. I guess I’ll ask him tomorrow," Nancy said. "How are you feeling, Nancy?" Steve asked. "I’m fine. I think everyone should get hit by a softball." "Not everyone would bounce back like you did" Steve said. "She’s had a lot of practice," Ned said sarcastically. "By the way, I heard as rumor that you guys were playing a basketball game," Steve said. "It’s boys versus girls," Ned said. "Three on three." "When were you planning to finish?" Steve asked. "When will who finish what?" a voice asked from behind Steve. They turned and saw Frank and Joe coming toward them. Ned said, "Steve wants to know when we’ll finish our game with the girls." "How about tomorrow?" Frank suggested. "Are you sure you’re up to it?" Joe asked, concerned. "Sure," Frank said sounding slightly annoyed. Then he grinned. "Besides, I’m only blocking Bess." "If you don’t mind, I’d like the campers to watch you show them teamwork," Steve said. "Then they can form teams and we’ll have a little competition." "Sounds good," Joe said. "How about we start at ten o’clock." "Fine," Steve said. "I’ll see you later." Once Steve was out of earshot, Frank said, "I haven’t seen Misty or Allan." "Allan is in his cabin," Nancy said. "Steve said he had a migraine." "If no one is there, he could’ve easily slipped out," Frank said. "You’re right," Nancy said scanning the area. "Has anyone seen Misty?" "No," Joe said. "She was supposed to meet me here half an hour ago, but hasn’t shown up yet." "She could be involved," Frank said. "She could have been the person I followed tonight," Nancy said. "What?" Joe asked. Nancy explained to Joe what happened at the docks. "If only I was able to catch the person, maybe we could’ve wrapped this case up." "We need to solve this soon," Joe said. "We need a plan," Frank said. "A smile appeared on his face. "and I have one." "What is it?" Nancy asked. "We flush out the saboteur and hopefully it’ll be Nancy’s attacker." "But what do we do?" Joe asked. "Be prepared for anything at anytime," Frank said walking away. Joe looked at Frank as he walked away. Joe turned his head and looked at Nancy and Ned. They both wore expressions of confusion which must have matched the look on his own face. Joe shrugged his shoulders and said, "I hate it when he does that." "What could he be planning?" Ned asked. "Whatever it is, I’ll end up doing something stupid," Joe mumbled. "I guess we’ll just have to expect the unexpected," Nancy said and tried to stifle a yawn. "I think I’m going to turn in. It’s been a long day." "All right," Ned said. "I’ll see you in the morning." Nancy gathered the girls and George. They went back to the cabin and went to bed. As Nancy closed her eyes, she wondered what Frank had in mind. The two of them were always knew what the other was thinking, but at this moment, she had no clue what he was planning. She just hoped it would she some light on her attacker. |
