CHAPTER 18

The next morning after breakfast, Nancy walked to the basketball court with Frank and George. Joe was already down at the court warming up with Bess. Ned would be joining them after he took care of some paperwork.

As they walked along, Nancy turned to Frank. "I wish you’d tell me what the plan is"

"You’ll just have to wait," Frank said with a smile. He put his baseball cap on his head. "We just need to concentrate on this game."

"Nothing will go wrong, will it?" George asked, slightly concerned.

"Everything will be fine, trust me."

When they arrived at the basketball court, Nancy and George went out onto the court while Frank sat down on the bench. While he watched the girls shoot the ball around, he wondered if he’d done the right thing by keeping everyone in the dark. Before breakfast he slipped notes into Misty and Allan’s mailbox knowing everyone checked their mailbox after breakfast.

On both notes he had written, "I know what you did."

He knew it wasn’t much, but if Misty and Allan were involved, they’d give themselves away. Hopefully, they’d do something during the game.

"Frank, come shoot a few to warm up!"

He looked up and saw Joe motioning for him to go out on the court. Frank said, "In a few minutes."

He watched as Nancy took a few free throws. He also thought about how he had gone to Joe and Allan’s cabin while everyone was a breakfast. He knew Joe would keep Allan distracted while he searched. Joe had told him which bunk was Allan’s, but he already knew just looking in the cabin. He searched through Allan’s things and found a bright green pair of sneakers hidden beside the table at the head of his bed under some magazines.

Frank took the sneakers and slid them into his duffel bag and brought it down to the court with him. He shoved the bag under the bench he was sitting on.

"Frank, aren’t you going to warm up?"

He turned and saw Ned coming up behind him. Ned sat down beside Frank to tighten the laces on his sneakers. Frank said, "I’ll warm up in a minute."

"Is everything all right?" Ned asked lowering his voice.

"Everything is fine." Frank said getting to his feet. "Let’s warm up."

Half an hour later, all the campers were sitting on the bleachers. Frank had worked up a sweat trying to block Bess as she tried to shoot the ball. The score was ten to nine in favor of the boys. Ned tried to make a shot, but Nancy knocked the ball away and passed it to George who easily sank the ball.

Joe retrieved the ball and moved toward the center court where Ned and Frank were standing. Joe kept his back to the net as he said, "Come on, guys, we need to win this. I don’t want to owe George a favor."

"Well, whose brilliant idea was it to put a wager on the game?" Frank asked.

"It was mine," Ned said glancing at the scoreboard. "We can win this. Just keep blocking."

"All right," Joe said.

Joe caught the ball from Ned then attempted to pass it back but then George stole it. He blocked George as she tried to make the next basket. George passed the ball to Nancy. Nancy jumped to make the shot and sank the ball. As she landed, she felt her left ankle twist under and she fell to the ground. She reached down and felt her ankle. It didn’t feel broken. She figured she had twisted it.

"Nancy? Are you okay?" Ned asked kneeling beside her.

"Yeah," she replied. "I just twisted my ankle."

"Can you continue?"

"Sure." Nancy reached out her hand and Ned pulled her to her feet.

"Come on, Nancy," George said coming over to them with a smile on her face. "One more basket and we win."

Frank watched Nancy get to her feet. Once he could see she was okay, he glanced back to the bench. Allan was standing off to the side, his eyes wandering as if he was searching for something. He watched as Allan’s gaze moved toward the bench where Frank placed his duffel bag earlier. The pair of bright green sneakers were sticking out of the bag. Frank knew he had to keep an eye on him.

"Frank, you ready?" Joe called out.

"Yeah," Frank said automatically keeping one eye on Allan.

Joe had the ball and passed it to Ned when he couldn’t move around George. Ned tried to move around Nancy, but she blocked him in every direction he turned. Ned made a quick pass to Frank.

Frank noticed Allan moving in front of the bleachers toward the bench. As Frank started to dribble the ball, Allan suddenly grabbed the bag and moved behind the bleachers. Frank dropped the ball and took off after Allan.

Allan looked up and saw Frank running toward him. Allan took off running up the path toward the dining hall. Frank pushed himself to go faster so he could grab Allan. Frank heard someone calling his name, but he wasn’t going to stop and let Allan get away. Frank kept an eye on Allan as he ran trying to close the gap.

Frank followed Allan past the dining hall and onto the trail. He knew exactly where Allan was by the amount of noise he was making. He spotted Allan slowing down and put on a burst of speed. He ran up behind Allan and tackled him. The two of them fell to the forest floor with a resounding thud.

Allan tried to crawl out of Frank’s grasp, but Frank was holding him as tight as he could.

"You’re not going anywhere!" Frank yelled.

"Get off me!"

"NO!" Frank held on tighter as Allan tried to throw him off. "You’re not going to get away with what you’ve done."

"He deserved everything he got!" Allan yelled. "He killed my mother!"

"He didn’t kill her," Frank said getting to his feet keeping a tight hold on Allan’s arm. "Your father blamed him and he poisoned you against your uncle."

"He broke my mother’s heart." Allan tried to break free of Frank’s grasp. "My uncle doesn’t deserve to have anything that will make him happy. He should be miserable, just like he made my mother."

"That doesn’t give you a reason to ruin your uncle’s camp."

"You were ruining the camp?" a voice asked incredulously. Frank and Allan turned to see Steve standing on the trail with Nancy and Ned. Steve looked like he was in shock. Steve walked slowly toward them with his hands outstretched in front of him. "Allan, tell me this isn’t true."

Allan looked off into the woods unable to meet his uncle’s gaze.

"It was you who attacked me, wasn’t it?" Nancy asked stepping up beside Steve.

"No, silly. That was me," a voice said from the woods.
