CHAPTER 18

They turned and saw Misty standing just by the tree line pointing a gun at them.

"Frank, you can let go of Allan now."

Frank released Allan and he quickly moved over to stand beside Misty. She said, "I knew you were trouble as soon as I heard you were detectives."

"We threatened your plan," Frank said.

"It’s truly a shame you figured it out," Misty said cocking the gun.

"Wait a second," Allan said. "We aren’t going to kill anyone."

"It’s too late now," Misty said. "If they hadn’t figured it out, we wouldn’t have to kill them."

"But that wasn’t part of the plan."

"It was your idea to destroy your uncle!" Misty yelled. "You wanted to make him pay for what he did to your mother. This was your idea. We need to finish what we started."

"So, Allan figured if he continued to sabotage the camp making sure things went wrong, that Steve would have to give up his dream," Frank said.

"You are too smart for your own good," Misty said with a cold smile.

"But why attack Nancy?" Ned asked.

"She attacked Nancy because she was afraid their plan would be discovered," Frank said. "She must have seen you head over to talk to Steve and Ned. Then she decided to attack Nancy and scare her hoping Nancy would mind her own business."

"But what she didn’t realize was that hitting me would make me want to search even more," Nancy said. "You underestimated my determination."

"Oh well," Misty said.

"You also hit the softball at me on purpose, didn’t you?" Nancy asked.

"It’s a shame it didn’t do the job it was supposed to," Misty said with an evil laugh.

"She was also by the dock last night," Frank said.

"You are smart, but it’s a shame your intellect won’t do you any good where you’re going."

"You won’t get away with this, Misty," Frank said stepping toward her. He could see movement in the woods behind her and didn’t want her to turn around. "I don’t think you have the guts to kill anyone."

"Really?" Misty replied raising an eyebrow. "The you’ll be the first to die." She carefully pointed the gun at Frank’s chest.

"How can you expect to get away with this?" Nancy asked. "The cops won’t believe this was an accident."

"Sure they will," Misty said. "The cops around here are very stupid."

"Four bodies will be awfully suspicious," Ned said.

"Not really," Misty said. "Once you’re all dead, there will be a horrible fire at the camp and your bodies won’t be recognizable."

"We can’t do this," Allan stammered. "We were only going to get even with my uncle. We weren’t planning on killing anyone."

"Are you getting cold feet? Misty asked.

"Sabotaging my uncle is one thing, but killing innocent people is out of the question."

"I’m sorry you see it that way," Misty said. "You’re the only one who knew for sure that I was involved. but now, I guess you’ll have to join the others."

"I don’t think so," a voice said from behind Misty. Startled, Misty turned to see the speaker. Nancy ran at Misty just as Frank jumped into action.

Frank and Nancy knocked Misty to the ground and she dropped the gun. Nancy and Frank held Misty down as Steve picked up the gun. Misty stopped struggling. Frank got to his feet and pulled Misty off the ground. Nancy stayed sitting on the ground as Frank turned and saw Joe coming out of the woods.

"Good timing," Frank said.

"What can I say," Joe said with a smile. "I knew you could handle it, but you weren’t supposed to be running." Frank shrugged.

Steve looked at Allan and shook his head sadly. "So, how did you guys figure out Allan and Misty were involved?"

"First of all, my attacker wore bright green sneakers. That was the only thing I could remember when I was knocked out," Nancy said. "Then, when I got hit by the softball, I saw Misty smiling and giving a thumbs up sign to someone, but I didn’t know who."

Frank picked up the duffel bag. He said. This morning I slipped notes into both their mailboxes after I found the sneakers under Allan’s bed." He pulled the sneakers out of the bag. "These are girls sneakers."

"Allan, if you were angry with me, why didn’t you talk to me."

"I don’t know," Allan mumbled.

"We need to get the police," Frank said.

"You’re right," Steve said. "Let’s go back to camp."

Joe came up and took a hold of Misty and followed Allan and Steve back to camp.

Ned looked at Nancy and asked, "Are you ready to head back?"

"Sure, but you’re going to have to help me," Nancy said.

"Why?" Frank asked.

"When I ran at Misty, I twisted my ankle again," Nancy said with a wry smile.

Frank kneeled down and saw Nancy’s ankle was beginning to swell. Frank looked at Nancy. "I think you sprained it this time."

"Great," Nancy said.

"I’ll carry you back," Ned said coming over. "You can ride on my back."

"All right," Nancy said and Frank helped her to her feet.

Ned turned around and Nancy climbed on his back, Frank grabbed the duffel bad and they headed to camp. As they walked along, Nancy said, "Frank, you should’ve told us what was going on. We could’ve been ready when you ran off."

"I wasn’t sure it was going to work," Frank said. "It’s a shame you hurt your ankle, we need to finish our game."

"We did finish," Ned said.

"What?"

"When you dropped the ball, Bess grabbed it and made the shot," Ned said. "The girls beat us, twelve to ten."

"Oh, no," Frank groaned. "Now we have to do a favor for the girls."

"Don’t worry," Nancy said with a smile. "It won’t be that bad."

When they exited the trail by the dining hall, the three of them went directly to the infirmary so Nancy’s ankle could be checked out. The nurse wrapped Nancy’s ankle with an ace bandage and gave her a pair of crutches. After stern instructions to keep off of it for a few days, Nancy was released.

The three of them left the infirmary and walked over to the administration cabin. Opening the door slowly, they saw Misty and Allan sitting against the wall next to Steve’s office with Joe standing in front of the door.

Steve came out of his office. He still looked shell-shocked and they all felt bad. Steve sat down on the corner of Ned’s desk. He quietly announced, "The police are on their way."

As Nancy sat down in Ned’s chair, she heard Steve mumble, "I just wish I understood why."

"Allan, if nothing else, you owe your uncle an explanation," Nancy said.

Allan looked at his uncle and looked back at the floor. "I can’t."

"Go ahead and spill your guts," Misty sneered.

"Shut up!" Allan yelled. "We never would’ve been caught if you would’ve left Nancy alone, but no. You wanted to scare her."

"You were too scared to do your own dirty work," Misty said.

"This isn’t my fault!" Allan yelled.

"Knock it off!" Joe yelled silencing the two of them. "You’re both in serious trouble."

At that moment the door opened and Derek came in. "Steve, I’m glad I found you."

"What’s up?" Steve asked.

"I answered the phone a little while ago when I was looking for you," Derek said. "Governor Williams is on his way to see his son."

"What’s the big deal?" Steve asked. "Jamie is down with the rest of the kids at the basketball court."

"No, he isn’t. In fact, no one has seen Jamie since the baseball game yesterday," Derek replied.

"What are you talking about?" Frank asked. "I saw Jamie in our cabin after the game. He told me he was heading to the dining hall."

"He was also in the cabin when we did the bed check last night," Derek said.

Frank looked at Joe. "Stay with Ned until the police arrive." Frank looked at Derek. "Are the kids from our cabin still down at the basketball court?"

"They should be," Derek said.

"Let’s go," Frank said running out of the administrative cabin with Derek on his heels.
