Nancy and Jamie rushed to the mouth of the cave. They each grabbed one of
Frank’s left and dragged him all the way into the cave. Nancy kneeled by
Frank’s head and put her fingers against his neck, feeling for a pulse. She
released a breath she had been holding when she felt his heart beating
strong and steady.
"Is he all right?" Jamie asked, in a high, frightened voice. "I’m sure he’ll be fine," Nancy said forcing a smile. She looked at Frank’s head and saw blood on his forehead. She searched her own pockets to apply pressure to the wound. When she found nothing in her pockets, she searched Frank’s jacket and found a handkerchief and the flashlight. As Nancy pressed the handkerchief to Frank’s head, slipped off her rain gear and covered Frank with it. "Jamie," Nancy said handing him the flashlight. "See if you can find some twigs and branches. We need to make a fire to get rid of the dampness." Jamie turned the flashlight on and made his way further into the cave. Nancy watched him and realized there was nothing in the cave. There were cobwebs hanging from the ceiling and moss growing on the north side of the cave. Nancy turned attention back to Frank. She gently shook him as she said, "Frank. Can you hear me?" Nancy began to worry. She knew head injuries were serious and needed immediate attention, but there was no way she could carry him out of the cave by herself and down the rock formation. She saw how still Frank was and wondered if she should leave him and go for help." "Nancy, there’s nothing here for a fire," Jamie said coming back to her. "That’s all right," Nancy said as Jamie sat down beside her. She saw he was wearing a sweatshirt. "Do you have a T-shirt on underneath your sweatshirt?" "Yeah," Jamie responded with a puzzled look on his face. "Take it off and get it wet from the rain. I may be able to wake Frank." As Jamie slid off his shirt, Nancy hoped she could wake Frank. She knew how it felt to be hit in the head, but she was concerned because Frank was not awake. She thought about all the times Frank and her had helped one another on cases. Nancy took the T-shirt from Jamie after he soaked it and wiped Frank’s face and wrists. She wished he would wake up. ***** Joe ran to the administration cabin. He had just found out why he was staying with the kids in Frank’s bunkhouse. When Derek returned, about a half an hour before dinner, Joe heard the kids tell him they dared Jamie to go to the cave. Frank had gone after him with a red-haired girl. Nancy. He slowed down as he passed the dining hall and continued to his destination. He knew he had to tell Steve and Ned what was going on. He pushed the door open so hard it crashed against the wall. Ned jumped out of his chair. "Joe, you startled me." "Sorry. Where’s Steve?" Joe asked closing the door. "He went into town," Ned said eyeing Joe suspiciously. "What’s wrong?" Joe explained to Ned what he found out at Frank’s cabin. Joe added, "The boys came over to get me about five hours ago. Since then, there’s been no sign of the three of them." "You know, they’re probably holed up somewhere until the storm lets up," Ned said sitting back down. "They should’ve been back by now," Joe said sitting down. "Even if they hadn’t found Jamie at the cave, they would’ve been back." "With this storm, there’s no way we’ll be able to find them tonight," Ned said. "But we can keep an eye out for them. If they don’t appear by sunrise, we’ll organize a search party to find them." "There’s something bothering me though," Joe said. "Something is wrong." "Like what?" "I don’t know, Ned," Joe said. "It’s a feeling I have." "They are fine," Ned said. "They always are." |
