Frank ran as fast as his legs could carry him. He
was angry. Joe had turned off his alarm clock accidentally and he
overslept. He hoped Nancy was still waiting for him.
He reached the library and looked around. Nancy was nowhere to be seen. He made his way back out the entrance and looked around. That was when he noticed a blue piece of paper on the floor. He bent down and picked the paper up. On the paper was a description of a red-haired girl who was named Nancy and directions to tell her to meet the brown-haired guy by the gym since his brother was sick in the locker room. Frank had a bad feeling. Running on pure instinct, Frank folded up the paper and headed for the gym. He moved as fast as he could. He wondered who wanted to meet Nancy at the gym. He knew he had made it clear to Nancy that they were going to meet in the library. He reached the hallway leading to the gym. The hallway was dark and quiet. He moved slowly down the hall straining to see anything in the dim light from the emergency exit sign. Frank saw something on the floor by the wall. Moving forward, he realized it was a person when he was close enough. He could tell it was a girl from her long hair. He kneeled down beside her and pushed her hair away from her face. He let out a small gasp when he realized it was Nancy. He checked to make sure Nancy was breathing. She was. He slowly rolled Nancy onto her back and she groaned. Frank saw a lump forming on Nancy’s forehead. Her eyes started to flicker. "Nancy." Her head moved slightly. "Nancy." Her eyes opened. She blinked a few times. She asked quietly, "What are you doing here?" "Looking for you," Frank said. "Can you sit up?" Nancy nodded and Frank helped her to sit up. Nancy put her hand to her forehead. Frank said, "You should see the nurse." "It’s not that bad." "What were you doing here?" "I was here to meet you." "We were to meet in the library." "You sent me a message by a boy to meet you down here because Joe was sick." "I didn’t send any message. I was running late." "Then how did you know where I was?" "I found a paper near the library entrance with your description and what you were to be told." Nancy looked down the hallway. Frank asked, "What happened?" "Someone grabbed me." Nancy looked at Frank. "Whoever it was knows I’m undercover. Whoever it was knows me. My cover is shot." "Do you know who it was?" Nancy shook her head. "I didn’t get a glimpse of the person. All I saw were shoes before I blacked out." "You need to be careful now what your cover is blown. You could be in more danger than before." "I’ll be fine." Nancy struggled to her feet. She was finally able to stand with some help from Frank. "You really should see the nurse. The bruise is already swelling. We need to know for sure you’re all right." "Fine," Nancy finally agreed. "I’ll go see the nurse." * * * * * By lunchtime, Nancy was feeling better. She was in the cafeteria sitting at the table with Debbie. Nancy had told Debbie she had thought she found a shortcut and slipped on the floor hitting her head. "You know," Debbie began, "you were lucky Frank came along. Who knows how long you would’ve been there." "It was nice he come along." "I think Frank has a crush on you," Debbie said. Nancy smiled slightly as she said, "Frank doesn’t have a crush." "I think he does. He can’t keep his eyes off you." Nancy looked at Debbie. She didn’t want to discuss Frank. She decided to change the subject. "I think you have a crush on Joe." "No way!" Debbie denied loudly. Nancy saw Debbie blushing. "You’re blushing." "I’ll admit Joe is cute, but I don’t think he’s interested." "He’s interested." "How do you know?" "Joe’s coming this way." A moment later, Frank and Joe reached the table and sat down beside them. Once they were seated, Joe asked, "How are you feeling, Nancy?" "All right." "Frank told me what happened," Joe said. "Frank is Nancy’s knight in shining armor," Debbie said. "I’m no knight," Frank said. "I just happened to stumble over Nancy." "Nancy was still lucky," Debbie said. At that moment, Ashley came over to the table. Ashley leaned on the table and looked at Debbie. "You look tired. Maybe you shouldn’t run in this weekend’s meet." "I’m still running and I will win." "You won’t win this time. This school will have a new champ." Ashley looked at Joe. She moved over to him and sat down on the other side of him. "You deserve someone better, Joe. You deserve me." "I’ll choose my own company, thank you." Joe looked at Debbie. "I kind of like the company I have now." Ashley got to her feet. She stared at Joe. "I warned you. You’ll be sorry you ignored me." Ashley walked away. Debbie looked at Joe and said, "You shouldn’t have angered her." "I don’t care if she’s angry. No one tells me what to do or whom I can see. I make my own decisions." Nancy watched Debbie smile at Joe. Joe said, "Let’s go for a walk." "Okay." Debbie and Joe got to their feet and left the cafeteria. Once they were alone, Nancy said, "Ashley has a short temper." "She’s not the only one." Nancy raised her eyebrows and Frank told her about the meeting with Matt and Ashley the day before. When Frank finished, Nancy said, "It looks like both of them have reasons to hate Debbie." "It looks that way. It looks like the information you need." "It is." Nancy looked at Frank. "Have you had any luck?" "None," Frank admitted. "So, what’s the next step?" "I was going to check the computers to see if there’s anything there. After that, I don’t know what I’ll do." "If you need any help, let me know." "I will." * * * * * That afternoon, Frank spent his study hall in the computer lab. He had logged on and was searching for anything that would give him a clue. Joe had talked with the other student getting threatening notes and had come up empty. Frank stared at the screen. He had just found a Web site about guns. Another site contained a list of students. There were names he recognized. He noticed Debbie’s name halfway down the list. He scrolled down the list. More names seemed familiar. He reached the bottom of the list. There were three names that jumped out at him. His name, along with Nancy and Joe’s were on the list. Frank went to the top of the page. He saw the heading was a list of people who needed to die. He couldn’t understand why a list of alleged victims was on the site. He wondered who would list their victims. Frank went through the pages to try and find out who developed the site, but there was nothing there. He slowly went through the list again. This time, he noticed the dates next to the names. The date was two days away. Something was going to happen on Friday.
