Frank realized they were in danger. Their cover had
been blown. Someone knew who they were and knew finding that person was
going to be even harder than before.
He shut off the computer as the bell rang. He left the computer lab knowing he had to find Nancy and Joe. He headed for Nancy’s locker. As he approached Nancy’s locker, he saw her putting books in her locker. He moved over to her and put his hand on her shoulder. She turned quickly around to face Frank. "I’m surprised to see you." He saw her face show concern. She asked, "What is it, Frank? What’s wrong?" "Can you trust Debbie?" "I believe so. Why?" "Find Debbie. I’ll meet you out front." "All right." Nancy nodded as she closed her locker. Nancy went off looking for Debbie while Frank went looking for Joe. He headed for their lockers and saw Joe leaning against the locker, looking at the girls as they walked by. When he reached Joe, Joe asked, "Where have you been?" "Close your locker. We need to go." "What’s up?" Joe asked, closing his locker. "A lot. Come on." Frank walked out the front doors with Joe close behind. They moved away from the doors and waited. A moment later, Nancy came out of the building with Debbie. The two of them hurried over to Frank and Joe. "What’s up?" Nancy asked. Frank looked at Debbie. "Do you have a car?" Debbie nodded. "Let’s go." "Why?" Debbie asked. "Debbie, it has to be important," Nancy said. "You need to trust me." "All right." Debbie led them to the parking lot. All four of them climbed into a blue four-door sedan. Debbie climbed behind the wheel and asked, "Where are we going?" "Someplace where we can talk, alone," Frank said. "Do you know a place?" "The park." "Then go there, Debbie," Nancy said. "All right." Twenty minutes later they arrived at the park. They got out of the car and made their way to a picnic table. They sat down. "All right, Frank," Nancy said. "What’s going on?" "What is it?" Joe asked. Frank looked at Debbie. "What I’m going to tell you needs to be kept a secret." "I promise," Debbie said, quickly glancing at Nancy. "Debbie, Joe and I are detectives from New York." "What?" Debbie was shocked. "Why are you telling me this?" "I found some information on the computer earlier. There’s a list of people. The list includes dates as when people are possibly going to die." He looked at Joe, Nancy and Debbie in turn. "Our names are on the list along with Friday’s date." Frank looked at Debbie. He could see the shock on her face. Nancy asked, "Frank, are you sure?" "I’m sure. I can find the information again to prove it to you, if you want." "We’re in danger," Joe said. "We need to be careful. We already know how easy it was for Nancy to be attacked." "When was Nancy attacked?" Debbie asked, looking at all of them. "Why didn’t you tell Debbie?" Frank asked. "I didn’t want her to worry," Nancy said. "But that doesn’t matter now. We need to figure out who wants to do this and stop them." "Debbie," Frank said, looking at her, "who would want you out of the way the most?" "Only two people. Matt and Ashley." "Could there be anyone else?" "Not that I know of," Debbie said. "I doubt Matt would do anything to physically hurt me. He never laid a hand on me. I don’t think he’d hurt me now." "What about Ashley?" Frank asked. "Could she be angry enough to want you dead?" "It’s possible. Out of her and Matt, I think Ashley would be the one who would want me dead." "What’s the next step?" Nancy asked. "We find out who is involved." Frank looked at Nancy. "Can you remember anything about your attacker?" Frank watched Nancy look down at the table. After a minute, she looked at him. Nancy got to her feet and walked around the picnic table looked at the ground. She stopped. She looked at Frank. "I remember seeing a pair of sneakers. It was a white sneaker with a blue star on the bottom." "Like these?" Debbie asked, showing her sneaker to Frank and Joe. "That’s the shoe," Nancy said. "Where can those shoes be purchased?" Frank asked. "At a local shoe store. These shoes are bought by most of the track athletes. Many of the track runners use a pair with a star on the bottom." Frank looked at Nancy. "Can you remember anything else?" "No. I couldn’t even pick out the voice. Whoever it was talked in a whisper. There’s no way to tell if it was male or female." "So, it’s possible a members of the track team is involved," Joe said. "We need to find the person," Nancy said. "We’re in danger, aren’t we?" Debbie asked. Frank looked at all three of them and nodded. He said, "Whoever is sending Debbie notes may be the same person we’re looking for. With the list of people on the screen near gun listings makes me believe the cases are connected." "Should I keep going to class?" "Absolutely," Frank said. "If you continue to go to class, whoever is after you will be off their guard." "Frank, didn’t you say that there had been guns found on school grounds?" Nancy asked. "Yeah?" Frank prompted. "Suppose whoever brought the guns also put the information on the Web site. They may want the information to be found so they’ll be stopped." "You’ve got a point." "But why?" Joe asked. "Why go to all that trouble?" "I don’t know. But I know we’ll find the answers when we catch the person involved." "That will tell us who brought the guns to school," Joe said. "I wonder if the police have found out who purchased those guns," Frank wondered. "We need to check with the police," Joe said. "Debbie, are you okay?" Nancy asked. Frank and Joe looked at Debbie. Frank could see Debbie’s face was pale. Debbie said, "I can’t believe this is going on here. I never thought there’d be guns in our school." "Everything will be okay," Nancy said. "We’ll find whoever is involved before anyone gets hurt." Debbie nodded her head but remained quiet. Frank looked at Nancy. "Frank, I want to see the list." "I’ll need some time to pull it up on my computer, but you can see it later. I want to check with the police first." "Good idea," Nancy said. "I’ll drop you off at the police station if you’d like," Debbie offered. "We’d appreciate it." Frank looked at Nancy. "We can meet at the hotel later." "That’s fine," Nancy said.
