CHAPTER 16

Nancy watched Joe grab Frank’s arm as she got to her feet. She followed with Ned as they made their way out of the house.

When they reached the driveway, Ned asked, “What’s going on?”

“The woman who had Frank was inside,” Nancy said, looking around.

“You told me she was in the fire,” Ned said.

“She’s inside,” Joe said. “I saw her.”

Nancy continued looking around. She saw some movement in the driveway by the house. She saw the woman step into the driveway. She was about to say something when the woman yelled.

“Frank!”

Nancy noticed a difference in the woman’s voice. The woman came toward them. Nancy stared at her. The woman wasn’t as tall as before. She called his name again, “Frank!”

“Callie,” Nancy finally said, recognizing the voice.

Callie hurried to them. She asked, “What’s with you guys?”

Nancy looked at Frank. She could see his face was pale, even though it was in the shadow of his hood. Frank asked, “Is it really you?”

“Frank,” Callie said softly, stopping right in front of him. She reached over and pushed the hood off his head. “Is something wrong?”

“You startled us,” Nancy said.

“Why?” Callie asked.

Nancy looked at Frank and Joe. The three of them filled Callie in. When they were done, Callie’s face was as pale as Frank’s.

“I’m sorry,” Callie said. “I thought I had the perfect costume.”

“It is nice,” Frank said.

“But it’s bad timing,” Callie finished.

Frank reached over and pulled Callie close. He said, “It’s okay.” He leaned back and looked at her. “But you have to do one thing.”

“What’s that?” Callie asked.

“You have to take the wig off.”

She pulled the black wig off her brown hair. “No problem.”

Nancy smiled as Frank looked at her. He said, “It’s time to party.”

Everyone nodded in agreement. They went back inside and moved out onto the dance floor. As a slow song started, Nancy felt Ned pull her close. She knew they were all safe and no vampires were going to get them. They all were going to be all right. They had lucked out again.
