Nancy looked at
the stairs. She was shocked. She couldn’t believe Frank through he had
blacked out. She knew there was a possibility his strange behavior was
connected to the victims. She didn’t believe he blacked out. Someone
was messing with Frank’s mind. She looked at Joe.
She could tell he was also shocked by his brother’s behavior. She could
see he was as surprised as she was. “Joe, we will figure this out.” “Frank’s loss
of memory is not good.” “You’re right.
Frank could be in a lot of danger during his blackouts.” “How will we
find out?” Joe got to his feet. “Following him is no good. We lose
the limousine each time.” “Each time you
followed the limousine you were in the van, right?” Joe nodded his
head. “This time we’ll use the car. More than likely, Frank will be
picked up in the limousine again.” “Is this going
to work?” “This is the
only way to find out.” Nancy could tell Joe was trying to figure this
out. She knew this was the only move they could make. “You’re right.
This is the only way.” “Everything will
be okay, Joe. You have to believe that.” Nancy hoped she sounded
reassuring, because she was worried. She needed to know if things were
really going to be all right. *
* * * * At the end of the
school day, Nancy had the rental car parked down the street from the
school. She turned the engine off as it began to rain. She was waiting
for school to let out. As she sat there,
she wondered if she was doing the right thing. She wasn’t sure. She
didn’t like the idea of spying on Frank, but she knew it was their only
way to find out where he was going. She picked up the
papers off the passenger seat and flipped through them. She had spent
most of the day collecting information on all the victims. Each of the
victims was between age 16 and 22 and closely resembled Frank. As she
read the descriptions of the other victims, she felt an uneasiness in the
pit of her stomach. She felt Frank was in more danger than they realized. She hoped they
could keep Frank from getting hurt. She couldn’t picture Frank as the
next victim. She flipped to
another page. All the victims had been acting strangely prior to their
deaths. The victims would disappear for hours on end, then couldn’t
account for where they’d been. The victims disappeared one last time
and were then found in a ditch or alley. All the victims were from caring
families. The families wouldn’t accept the victims had committed
suicide. All the families wanted to know the truth. Nancy set the
papers on the seat. She hoped they could be able to figure this out. She
had this feeling the strange deaths and Frank’s behavior were
connected. She looked out the
windshield and saw the limousine approaching the school from the opposite
direction. The limousine pulled into the school parking lot and stopped.
She saw Frank leave the school. She picked up the
binoculars off the seat and lifted them to her eyes. She focused on
Frank. His face was completely relaxed. He moved to the limousine and got
in. She looked back at the school steps and saw Joe come out. She could
tell from his face that he had seen the limousine. She watched Joe run
for the van. Nancy set the
binoculars down and watched the limousine pull out of the parking lot.
She started the car engine. A moment later, the van pulled out behind the
limousine. She pulled away from the curb and followed the van. She followed the
van through town. She saw the limousine make a left turn, but Joe
continued on. She made the left turn. She saw the limousine stop in front
of a building. The building had 13 floors and was made of brick. There
were bushes on both sides of the doors. There were expensive cars parked
on the street. The building appeared to be an apartment complex. She drove past.
She looked in her rearview mirror and saw Frank get out of the limousine.
She watched him enter the building. She pulled the car over and stopped. She felt pretty
good knowing where Frank had been going. She could tell it was getting
dark. She knew she needed to get back to the Hardy house since Joe was
waiting for her. Glancing back at the building once last time, she knew
they had what they needed. She pulled away from the curb.
