CHAPTER 17

It was Thursday evening and the sun was beginning to slowly set. Nancy Drew had spent the afternoon running errands picking up things for her wedding, which was two days away. She thought back to the past few days as she walked to her car.

On Tuesday, her friends, Frank and Joe Hardy, arrived in River Heights with their girlfriends Callie Shaw and Vanessa Bender. Frank was to be her fiance’, Ned Nickerson’s, best man. Joe was to be an usher.

The following day, Wednesday, they had gotten together at the park for a picnic. They spent the entire afternoon hanging out before going out to a late dinner. Everyone was having a good time.

When Nancy got to her car, she was smiling. Everyone was enjoying themselves. Everyone was looking forward to the wedding. Nancy put the packages in the trunk, then climbed into the car. As she closed the driver’s door, she glanced at the passenger seat. She saw her cellular phone on the seat.

She picked up the phone and smiled. She recalled when she and Ned had gotten their phones, with the name, Mr. and Mrs. Ned Nickerson. They had thought it was right since they would soon be married. She was glad she had the phone.

Nancy looked at her watch. She realized she was late to meet Ned. She quickly dialed the phone. It was picked up on the second ring.

“Hello?” Ned asked.

“Hey, Ned, it’s Nancy. I’m running late.”

“So am I. But I’m on my way to the restaurant now for our quiet dinner alone.”

“I’ll be there soon.”

“I’ll be waiting,” Ned said. “I love you.”

“I love you, too.”

“Bye.”

“Bye.” Nancy turned off her phone.

Nancy smiled as she started the engine. She was eager to spend a quiet night alone with her fiance’. She knew it wouldn’t be long before they were married. She was anxious for their wedding day and was glad the day was almost there.

She pulled her car onto the road and headed back to River Heights. She drove along the river, which was on the passenger side of the car. She couldn’t believe how nice the weather was. She hoped it would last. There was a chance of rain on their wedding day and she hoped that it would hold off until the ceremony was over.

Nancy looked in her rearview mirror and saw a car quickly approaching her. She glanced back at the road. She saw the road was starting to twist and turn. There was only one lane going in both directions.

She eased her foot off the gas pedal slowing the car down before she reached the sharp turn ahead. She knew that even in good weather, the turns needed to be taken with caution. She glanced in the rearview mirror again. The car was getting closer. Nancy slowed the car down more so she wouldn’t go through the guardrail.

The other car swung around her on the driver’s side. The other car put on a burst of speed passing Nancy’s car. The car moved forward. Both cars made the turn.

All of a sudden, Nancy saw another car coming at them. Nancy realized the driver of the car that passed her must have seen the car too. The car slowly moved back into their lane, pushing her toward the guardrail. There was no shoulder for Nancy to move on to.

There was another turn, but it was too late. Nancy pushed her foot down on the brake. The car wasn’t slowing down enough. Nancy’s car went through the guardrail. The car hit the water.
