“What?” Ned asked, pushing past Frank and kneeling down beside the
carrier.
They watched as Ned pulled the blanket away from her face with a trembling hand. “Oh, Nancy,” Ned said. He put his hand against her face. He reached up and pushed her hair away from her forehead. “Nancy. Can you hear me? Nancy, please wake up.” When Ned received no answer, he looked at Frank. Frank said, “We need to get her to a hospital. She’s been hurt.” “Where did you find her?” Ned asked, looking back at Nancy. “In a cabin,” Frank said. “I’ll explain everything later. We really should get her to the hospital.” “All right,” Ned said. As Ned stood up, Frank took his place and grabbed the carrier once again. They moved toward the detective. When they reached him, Detective Allen said, “I’m glad you found her.” “Can we have an ambulance waiting for us?” Frank asked. “No problem.” Detective Allen signaled one of his officers over. The officer took Frank’s place carrying Nancy. They stepped aside and followed the officer back to the vehicles. * * * * * Hours later, Frank was sitting in the waiting room with Joe, Callie and Vanessa. Ned had gone into the emergency room with Nancy. Frank had called Carson. When he arrived, he had gone right into the emergency room as well. All four of them were waiting quietly for work on how Nancy was doing. Joe broke the silence. “Frank, I want you to know that I’m sorry I didn’t believe you sooner. I should have. I’m sorry.” Frank remained quiet. He looked at his hands. He knew he should accept his brother’s apology, but part of him felt let down. He wished Joe had believed him to begin with, then they wouldn’t have wasted so much time trying to find her. He knew he should tell Joe it was all right, but he was too worried about Nancy. At that moment, Ned came into the waiting room. He moved over to them and sat down, looking at each one of them. Frank looked at Ned and saw a smile on his face. Ned said, “Nancy is going to be all right.” “What a relief,” Frank said, leaning back in his seat. “She’s going to be here for a few days, but she was very lucky.” “I’m glad she’s all right,” Joe said. “So am I.” Ned looked at Frank. “Frank, I’m glad you found her.” “I’m glad she’s back.” “When can we see her?” Joe asked. “Later this afternoon. The doctors are moving her to a room right now. They want her to rest.” “We’ll head to the hotel and get cleaned up then,” Joe said, looking at Callie and Vanessa. “If you need anything, you know where to call.” “Thanks,” Ned said. Joe looked at Frank, but when he didn’t move, he left with Callie and Vanessa. Frank looked at Ned when they were alone. Frank asked. “Is she really going to be all right?” “She’s going to be fine, thanks to you. You know, I’m glad you stuck with your feeling. If you hadn’t, I don’t know how things would’ve turned out. I’m glad you’re a friend of hers. She’s luck you’re on her side.” “I was glad to help.” Ned got to his feet and started to leave the waiting room. He stopped and turned to look at Frank. “Frank, because of you, I’ve got Nancy back. Thank you.” Frank smiled. “You’re welcome.” Ned left the room. Frank sat quietly for a few more minutes. He was relieved that Nancy had been found and was alive. But he still felt bad. He recalled what he said to Ned a few days earlier. He knew he spoke out of anger. He had been concerned, frustrated and tired. He knew he had to get rid of the guilt he felt. He knew the only way to do that was to apologize to Ned. He knew Ned was the only person he had to apologize to. He also had to make amends with Joe. He knew it needed to be done soon. He got to his feet and left the hospital.
