CHAPTER 19

About half an hour later, Frank parked Maggie’s van beside a row of trailers behind the arena. They three of them got out and Melissa led them to a twenty-eight foot trailer. They walked in silence. As they approached the trailer, they noticed there was just one light on.

Frank put his hand on Melissa’s shoulder to stop her. Frank quietly asked, “Could Jake be inside?”

“As far as I know, he had dinner reservations. He was taking the band and crew out to dinner. He was going into town, which is about an hour away.”

“Go knock on the door,” Frank said. “We need to make sure he’s gone.”

“All right,” Melissa said and hurried toward the trailer leaving Frank and Joe standing in the shadows.

“What happens if he’s there?” Joe asked. “What do we do then?”

“Let’s just wait and see what happens,” Frank said tensely keeping his eye on Melissa. He watched her knock on the door and wait. After a few moments passed, he and Joe made their way to the trailer.

Frank pulled his lock-pick kit out of the back pocket of his jeans. In less than a minute, Frank had the door unlocked and the three of them hurried in. Frank quietly closed the door and saw Melissa reaching for a lamp. “Don’t turn on anymore lights.”

“Why?” Melissa asked, puzzled.

“If Jake comes back early or someone walks by, they might realize there are more lights on than there should be.”

“Okay,” Melissa said. “What should I do?”

“Watch to see if anyone is coming,” Frank said as he headed over to the desk. He was surprised at how bare the trailer was. The only furniture aside from the desk was a chair, couch and four filing cabinets, which Joe was already going through.

Frank sat down at the desk and turned on the computer. While he waited for the computer to boot up, he looked through the drawers of the desk. He continued to search and found several receipts for thousands of dollars to Mr. Bob Smith. He left the receipts in the desk. Frank then found a ledger and pulled it out. He set it on the desk and skimmed through it. He was very surprised to see that not much money was being made.

Frank looked at the computer and saw the ledger come up. He scrolled through the entries and saw more money was being paid out than there was taken in. He looked at the computer screen, then the ledger. The numbers matched perfectly.

“Frank, I think I found the insurance policy.” Joe said making Frank look at him.

“What’s it say?”

“Well, well,” Joe said turning to face Frank. “Guess who is the sole beneficiary of Melissa’s life insurance policy?”

“Jake?” Frank asked.

“Good guess,” Joe said focusing back on the paper. “But there’s a clause in here.”

“What’s it say?” Melissa asked, turning away from the door.

“He gets the money if you die. And if it’s rule an accident, he gets twice as much.”

“Then those things weren’t accidents,” Melissa stated.

“Wow,” Joe said.

“What is it?” Frank asked.

“This policy is for twenty-five million dollars.”

“Twenty-five million dollars!” Melissa exclaimed. “That’s a lot of money.”

Frank leaned back in the chair. “It is. It seems like someone may be trying to cash in.”

“But what good would the money do for him?” Melissa wondered aloud. “I make more money performing in a year than that policy.”

“That’s not what these ledgers are showing,” Frank said grabbing a blank disk, He took the disk and pushed it into the hard drive. He pushed a few keys and waited for it to copy and put the ledger back in the drawer. As he pushed the chair back into place, he hit the desk a little hard. Something hit the floor. He bent down and found another ledger book.

Joe asked, “What’s that?”

“A second set of books,” Frank said opening the ledger. He glanced at the computer screen. He made a mental calculation and realized there was something very wrong. This second book showed higher numbers than on the computer screen.

“Someone’s coming,” Melissa hissed breaking into Frank’s thoughts.

Frank quickly grabbed the disk out of the hard drive and shoved it into his pocket. He turned off the computer and moved toward the door as he put them ledger in his jacket and zipped it up.

As Frank stepped over to Melissa, the door to the trailer opened and Jake walked in. Jake stopped abruptly. “What are you two doing in here?”
