CHAPTER 11

A while later, the police left the room where Frank was. They approached Joe, who asked, "Have you found out how Frank was put in the car? Did David do it?"

"It’s possible," one officer answered. "David is refusing to talk to us anymore until he sees his lawyer. We’ll need all of you to come down to the station to sign your statements."

"We’ll be down in a little while," Damon said.

The officers left and they heard the floor creak. Turning, they all saw Frank making his way slowly toward them. He looked very pale in the waiting room lights and Joe didn’t think it was right for his brother to be up and moving around yet.

"Should you be up?" Joe asked.

"I can’t sit still," Frank said. "I’ve been still too long." He sat down and looked up at them. "So, what are you talking about?"

"We’re just trying to work out why," Seth said.

"I may have an idea," Frank said.

"What is it?" Joe asked.

"I overheard Mitchell and Jeremy talking."

"You were spying on me?"

"Calm down," Joe said before Jeremy lost his temper completely.

Frank explained what he had overheard about Jeremy possibly losing his ride at the end of the season. "I think David was planning to get Jeremy out of the way so that he could be the driver. I think was Mitchell was behind it all, ready to take a piece of the cash that came David’s way." Frank looked at Damon. "I think the recognition this team has was enough to make him do whatever he could to be a part of it, even if it meant going to extremes."

"Well, my attitude wasn’t helping matters," Jeremy admitted. "I was just helping David get the ride."

"David would never have been a driver for me," Damon said. "I want people who are trustworthy." Damon put his hand on Jeremy’s shoulder. "Are you up for another year?"

Jeremy stared at Damon. "Are you sure?"

"I am. We’ll do more practicing and get you ready for next season."

"I can’t promise I will always win," Jeremy said. "But I will do the best that I can."

"That’s fine with me." Damon smiled.

"That’s where you went!" a voice said behind them.

They all turned to see the man with glasses standing in the doorway.

"I couldn’t stay put any longer," Frank said. "I had to move."

"Well, I’m going to release you, but you need to take it easy. You are going to be sore for a while and your body is going to tell you when you are doing too much."

Frank nodded his head and the man returned to the back of the care center. Frank looked at the others. "You know, it’s a shame. I wanted to drive the car around the track."

"There’s no such luck," Joe said. "It’ll be lucky if any part of the car is salvageable."

"That doesn’t matter right now," Damon said. "We will have a car for the future."

"Absolutely!" Seth and Jeremy agreed.

"So," Seth continued. "Let’s get out of here and get something to eat. It’s been a long day."

"It sure has," Frank said.

Frank gingerly got to his feet and they all exited the care center.

As they moved past the people gathered outside, they saw Aaron coming toward them. Aaron looked at Jeremy. "Are you all right?"

"I’m fine," Jeremy answered. "Thanks for your help out there."

"It was no problem. Drivers like us need to stick together," Aaron said.

"Aaron," Damon began, "We were going out to get something to eat. Why don’t you join us?"

"I think I will, but I need to go change first."

"We’ll meet you back here," Jeremy said.

As the others headed to the trailers, Joe looked at Frank. "I think we had a great time at the track."

"Speak for yourself."

"You didn’t?"

"It probably would have been better if I hadn’t been hit on the head, kidnapped, hidden in a racecar and banged around."

"How could it have been better?"

Frank stared at his brother wondering if he had lost his mind.

"Frank, you got the change to be in a racecar."

He shook his head in disbelief looking at Joe. "Maybe we could find a way to give you a chance."

"Really?" Joe asked hopefully, his eyes going wide, unaware of the smirk on Frank’s face.

"Sure, we’ll catch up with Aaron and see if he’ll give you the same treatment I had."

"I’m not riding in the trunk. It’s dangerous. Someone could get hurt."

"You could also get hurt behind the wheel."

"I wouldn’t get hurt," Joe said. "I race the van all the time at home."

Joe watched Frank’s eyes go wide. He realized he had never told his brother that little bit of news and had just squealed on himself.

Frank held out his hand to Joe. "Keys."

"I can’t hand over the keys."

"Why not?" Frank asked.

"Neither of us will get home then," Joe replied with a smile. "You are in no condition to be behind the wheel."

Frank closed his eyes knowing his brother was right.

"I know I’m not going to win, so I’ll drop it."

"Good. Then it’s time to get some food. I’m hungry."

As they saw the others coming back toward them, Joe realized how glad this case was over. They had found out who was behind the incidents and no drivers were hurt. They saw an old friend and had a good time.

In the end, it was a typical summer weekend for them.
