CHAPTER 11

Frank and Joe jumped to their feet as the car slid along the wall keeping the back end there. As the car finally stopped moving, emergency vehicles pulled onto the track and rushed to the scene.

Keeping their eyes on the car, Frank and Joe watched as the safety net on the driver’s side fell down. A moment later, Jeremy climbed out to the thunderous applause of the crowd. He stared at his car.

"Ladies and gentlemen," a voice said over the loud speaker. "Jeremy Papiertil has climbed from his car and appears to be all right. Qualifying will resume once the track is cleared."

Frank and Joe watched as a two truck pulled up to the car and quickly got it hooked up to go back to the garage.

As the track was cleared, they sat down and Frank asked, "What could make the car go into the wall like that?"

"The car could‘ve gotten loose and Jeremy could have had problems holding it. He may have run over some debris or hit a slick spot. It’s also possible he could’ve blown a tire."

"Will he still run in the race?"

"Definitely," Joe said. "They’ll look to see what repairs are needed on his car. If it is too much, they’ll go to the backup car."

"Qualifying will now continue," a voice said over the loud speaker.

As qualifying continued, Joe watched the cars wondering what it would be like to be behind the wheel. He knew the cars could go at excessive speeds and there was always the chance for an accident, but he wished for the chance to get behind the wheel. He wouldn’t even mind working on a car. He knew that if the opportunity ever came along, he would jump at it.

When qualifying was over, Frank and Joe made their way along the garages once again to meet up with Seth. They observed crews making adjustments to their cars getting them ready for the practice run the following day.

As they neared the garage where Seth was, they both looked up at the same time, just in time to step out of the way as a wrench was thrown in their direction. The wrench hit the ground between them and they looked into the garage to see Jeremy with a hammer in his hand approaching Seth, swinging the hammer. The rest of the crew was standing back from Jeremy.

"You had one job, Seth!" Jeremy yelled. "And that was to take care of the car! But you blew it! I would’ve had the pole, but that’s not happening now!"

"The accident wasn’t my fault," Seth protested.

"It is!"

Another crew member grabbed hold of Jeremy’s arm that had a hold of the hammer. "Knock it off. You need to wait to find out what happened to the car before you go accusing someone."

"Seth is responsible!" Jeremy bellowed.

"Knock it off! This team will have a car for you to drive for the race. Everything will be fine."

Jeremy stared at Seth for a moment. He turned and stormed away. The rest of the crew moved back into the garage.

Frank and Joe stepped up to set as he let out a breath. Joe asked quietly, "What’s going on?"

Seth turned quickly to face them. He was shaking slightly, but stopped when he saw them. "Did you two hear everything?"

"We heard enough," Joe said. "Why was Jeremy accusing you?"

"He’s angry he didn’t qualify well and was taking it out on me."

"Why do you put up with it?" Frank asked.

"He doesn’t get angry that often, but he does have a short temper," Seth said. "And even though that may be a problem for some people, this is one of the best teams to work for and I’m not leaving."

"Have you always had a problem with Jeremy?" Joe asked looking into the garage to see if he could the driver.

"Not until recently," Seth admitted, then looked at his watch. "Guys, I really need to work on the car." He looked up at the brothers. "How about we meet for dinner in a couple hours?"

"That’s fine," Frank said.

"We know you have a job to do," Joe added. "Focus on that now. "We’ll catch up later and meet you at the restaurant."

"All right."

As Seth headed into the garage, Frank and Joe left the area. Frank was the first to speak. "Do you think the incident was a little weird?"

"I thought it was unusual," Joe admitted as they walked. "And it looked like Seth was scared of him and it takes a lot to get Seth scared."

"We’ll probably find out more at dinner."

"You’re probably right."

Hours later, Frank and Joe arrived at the restaurant first. They were seated at a table and ordered drinks while they waited for Seth’s arrival. A few minutes later, Seth walked through the restaurant doors and hurried over to the table.

"Sorry I’m late," Seth said sliding into a chair between the Hardy’s.

"It’s all right," Frank said.

"Yeah." Joe grabbed his glass and took a drink. "Besides, we’ve only been here a few minutes."

The waitress stepped up to the table and too the meal orders as well as Seth’s drink order. Once she was gone, Joe asked, "Has Jeremy calmed down at all?"

"He has," Seth said as the waitress returned with his drink.

"Why did Jeremy blame you?" Frank asked.

"Jeremy chooses one person to take his anger out on and that happens to be me."

"I wouldn’t put up with it," Joe stated.

"I just ignore it. This is a great job and I’m doing something I love." Seth smiled. "I can handle a little attitude." Seth switched subjects. "So, are you two still involved with the detective work?"

"We are," Joe said, grinning.

"Any difficult cases?"

"Nothing too dangerous," Frank said.

Seth shook his head, smiling. "You two are still the same."

"So are you," Joe said.

A couple hours later after they finished eating, they returned to the track since they would be staying in Seth’s trailer while they were there. They got checked through security and then continued toward the motor homes and trailers, which were on the other side of the garages.

"You know, Joe, I still remember your love for cars," Seth said.

"That love is still there," Joe admitted. "I can’t tell you how many times I’ve rebuilt the van’s engine."

"Probably as many times as its died," Seth said.

"Not that often." Joe grinned. "It’s really been only once that happened."

As Joe and Seth continued talking about engines, Frank looked toward the garage doors. He thought he saw some movement in the shadows of the garage, but he couldn’t be sure. It seemed as if the shadows were moving away from the garage.

Suddenly they all saw a flash of light near the garages. Seth yelled, "That’s our garage!"

The three of them ran toward the garage knowing they had to do something quickly before the entire structure caught fire.

Before they could reach the garage, there was an explosion knocking all three of them to the ground.
