CHAPTER 11

Frank was the first to his feet and he could see flames licking the garage door. Spotting a fire extinguisher sitting in the back of a truck, Frank grabbed it and moved to the flames.

He aimed the extinguisher low and pressed the trigger releasing the white foam. Out of the corner of his eye he saw Joe and Seth making their way inside. A moment later they were back at his side helping to extinguish the flames.

When Frank emptied his extinguisher, he saw there were only a few flames left. He heard sirens and saw security arriving with more extinguishers.

Joe emptied the last of his and they backed away to let the professionals finish the job. As his gaze shifted, he saw Seth exiting the garage where the car was located.

Before they could ask about the car, security approached the three of them.

"What’s going on?"

"We spotted the fire as we were heading for the trailers," Frank said.

The security guard turned to Seth. "What were you doing?"

"I’m Seth Andrews," he said pulling out his identification card. "I’m a member of Team Starr and this is the garage where our car is parked. I was just checking inside to make sure that the fire hadn’t spread."

"You three stay right here," the security guard said. "The track officials are on their way down."

Seth moved to Frank and Joe. Frank asked, "Was there any damage?"

"A little, but it can be fixed."

As they waited for the officials, Frank’s gaze scanned the area. There were some burn marks on the garage door, but there was nothing else. Nothing seemed out of the ordinary. Frank wondered if the person he had seen before had been at the garage.

Frank’s gaze moved to the side of the garage and he spotted a gas can. He had a feeling that was used to start the fire.

Minutes later, a dozen men appeared, wearing official jackets. One was wearing a red jacket.

Seth said, "The one in the red is car owner Damon Starr."

"What happened here?" the owner demanded and the three of them told him.

Damon focused on Seth. "What were you doing here?"

"We were on our way to my trailer," Seth said. "We walked by and noticed the flames, then extinguished them." He looked Mike in the eye. "We didn’t do anything to damage the car."

"I know," Damon said. "I know you’re dedicated to this team and wouldn’t hurt it."

The officials came over to them. "We’ll put some more security on duty. The car to be all right. We’ll post someone outside the garage for the rest of the night and look into the incident in the morning. It’s too dark to find anything now. We’ll start at dawn."

Frank looked at Seth who was staring at them. Seth said, "We should head to my trailer."

Frank and Joe readily agreed.

A few minutes later, the three of them entered Seth’s 20-foot trailer that slept six people. Right upon entering, Joe spotted a picture of him and Seth.

He looked at his friend. "I still can’t believe you have that picture."

"Of course I do," Seth said reaching into the refrigerator and pulling out several drinks. "I had to keep a picture of the Sleuth because that was the first engine you and I worked on together. And by the way, how is the boat’s engine? Is it still running or have you broken it?"

"It’s running great," Frank said taking a drink from Seth. "You taught Joe so well that he keeps doing check ups on it to make sure nothing has gone wrong."

"Hey, I spent a lot of weekends working on that engine to get it to run so smoothly, " Joe said taking a drink from Seth. "Besides, I don’t want you ruining it with all your hot riding out on the bay."

"Who me?" Frank asked, teasingly.

"Is there anyone else who takes the Sleuth out?" Joe countered.

"Do you really want me to answer that?" Frank asked.

Seth laughed as he sat down. "You two are still the same." He looked at Joe. "I’m glad the engine is still working for you. It was fun working on that boat engine. You and I had such a good time."

"We sure did," Joe said.

They chitchatted for a few more minutes before the conversation turned to what happened earlier.

"You know," Seth began. "I really wonder who would want to hurt this team."

"If there’s someone planning to ruin the team, that would give us a lead," Joe said.

"I can’t ask you two to get involved," Seth said.

"We’re already involved," Frank stated. "Seth, tell us what you think is going on."

Seth was quiet for a moment. "Honestly, I don’t know." He looked at Frank and Joe in turn. "But I have a feeling the fire was deliberately set."

"Why do you feel that way?" Frank asked.

"Well, there’ve been a lot of incidents that have been occurring to the team."

"Like what?" Frank asked.

"At last week’s race before qualifying, the tires of the car had been slashed. We were able to use some back up tires."

"Do you know how the tires were slashed?" Joe asked.

"We have no clue, but it had to have been done with a knife."

"Did anything else happen?" Joe asked.

"Parts have disappeared from different garages. Tools have also vanished. Those kinds of things."

"Seth, do you think the cat was tampered with today?"

"It seems like it. We were down here early this week to conduct some test runs. We had that car perfectly set up to get the pole."

"Is there anyone who would want to beat Jeremy?" Joe asked.

"I think a lot of drivers want to beat him." Seth began to explain. "You see, each driver collects points from the position they finish in the race. The points keep being added together through the end of the season. And at the end of the year, the driver with the most points wins the championship. Jeremy is currently in second place. He has a good shot at being the champion again this year."

"Does Jeremy have any rivals?"

"He has some enemies of the other drivers. He could have angered someone."

"How did he make his enemies?" Joe asked.

"Jeremy talks dirty to the press about the other drivers. A lot of them are tired of the badmouthing."

"But Jeremy is a good driver," Joe said.

"He is, but that’s not the only part," Seth said. "This sport is also about the fans. If you anger the fans or do something they really don’t like, that driver gets a bad reputation. And Jeremy has angered a lot."

"Do you think any of the other drivers would tamper with the car?" Frank asked.

"It seems unlikely. They would be booted from the competition indefinitely."

"What about someone on the team?" Joe asked.

"I don’t think so." Seth looked at both of them. "I wish I was more help. There’s not much to go on."

"We’ll figure out what’s going on," Frank said.

"I hope so," Seth said. "I really hope so."
