CHAPTER 11

The next morning, Joe was up after Seth had already left for the garage to do the pre-race check on the car. Joe looked around the trailer and realized Frank wasn’t there with them. He quickly changed and hurried to the garages wondering and hoping Frank was there with Seth.

When he reached the garage, he could see the crew was hard at work. Seth moved away from the car at that moment and looked at him. Seth moved to Joe.

"Is Frank around?" Joe asked after they greeted each other.

"He isn’t," Seth said. "Actually, I haven’t seen him since yesterday."

Joe was quiet. He didn’t like it that Frank had not been seen for several hours. He had a bad feeling.

"Do you think Frank is in trouble?" Seth asked.

"It’s possible, but he could also be onto something."

"Where could he be?"

"I’ll have to find out."

"How are you two doing this morning?" a voice asked behind them.

They both turned to see Jeremy coming toward them.

"I’m all right," Joe said.

"Same here," Seth said.

"That’s good to hear," Jeremy said. He focused on Seth. "How’s the car coming?"

"It will be ready for the race." Seth looked at Joe. "I’ll talk to you later."

Joe nodded and Seth returned to the garage.

"Where’s your brother?" Jeremy asked.

"He’s around somewhere," Joe replied, then switched subjects. "So, are you ready for the race?"

"I am. I am going to do my best." Jeremy looked at his watch. "I hate to run, but I need to get to the driver’s meeting."

"No problem," Joe said. "I’ll see you later."

"Bye."

As Jeremy headed off, Joe moved over to the door watching the people as they moved about trying to catch a glimpse of their favorite drivers. He was wondering where Frank was. Joe knew that his brother would leave him a clue if he was off following a lead. He knew Frank had found something.

Joe suddenly saw the man Frank had pointed out to him the previous day. He saw the man was talking with another driver. Joe recognized him as David Allin. He moved toward them when he realized they were having a heated discussion. The man was shaking his finger at David and the color was rising in his face.

David took hold of the man’s shoulders and said, "This is the way this has to be done. It’s your fault you were followed and this is the only way to deal with the snoop."

"The kid will be killed."

"That’s not our concern," David said and looked at his watch. "I need to get to the meeting. Just stay quiet." David turned and walked away while the man headed in the opposite direction.

Joe had a feeling they were talking about Frank and knew his brother‘s whereabouts. He quickly followed the man as he went toward the trailers. When he saw which trailer the man went into, Joe decided to be straightforward. He moved to the door and knocked.

A moment later, the door opened. The man asked, "What do you want?"

"We need to talk."

"About what?"

"My brother," Joe stated.

The man started looking around nervously. "I don’t know your brother."

"I believe you do."

"I don’t. I’m sorry."

The man tried to close the door, but Joe held it open. "I heard you two talking," Joe said. "I know you were talking about my brother. I want to know where he is."

"He can’t tell you," a voice said behind Joe.

He turned around quickly, unprepared because he was hit in the jaw. As he recovered, he saw David standing there.

David said, "You’ll never know where your brother is."

David swung again, but this time Joe was ready. He ducked and David’s fist made contact with the trailer. Joe grabbed the other arm and lifted it up behind David’s back as he pushed him against the trailer.

"Where’s my brother?" Joe demanded.

"I have no idea," David said.

"You’re lying," Joe said lifting the arm up higher.

"I’m not lying! I have no clue!"

At that moment, the man took off running. Joe took one second to decide that the man did know the whereabouts of Frank. He released David and went after the man. Joe chased the man through the trailer parking area. He was surprised at how fast the man was, but was determined to catch him. It was the only way he was going to find Frank.

The man led Joe to the area where the souvenir trucks were parked. They ran between the people who were walking around and collecting items that showcased their favorite drivers. Joe followed the man through the crowd and saw they were heading for the gate. Putting on an extra burst of speed, Joe was able to gain on the man.

The man looked over his shoulder at Joe and in the process, tripped over his own feet. As the man hit the ground, Joe slid to a stop.

"You caught me," the man said breathlessly rolling onto his back.

"Why did you run?" Joe asked.

"I’m going to end up in jail."

"It’s a possibility," Joe said. "Now, where is Frank? I know you have an idea where he is."

"I don’t. I haven’t seen your brother."

"You saw Frank last night at the garage when you came to talk to Jeremy. Now, where is he?"

"I don’t know. David put him somewhere."

"Where?" Joe demanded.

"I honestly don’t know."

"You said Frank would be killed. You do know."

"That’s what David told me. I really don’t know."

"Why did you take Frank?"

"He was eavesdropping and we caught him. David felt Frank was a troublemaker and wanted him out of the way."

Joe reached down and pulled the man to his feet. "We’re going to security."

"Please, no, not there," the man begged.

"No choice."
