CHAPTER 11

Joe suddenly realized that David was going to get Jeremy in the race.

Joe ran toward the pits and quickly found Team Starr watching the cars as the pace car led them around the track. He reached the pit just as the green flag was dropped.

Sliding to a stop beside his friend, Seth asked, "Where have you been?"

Joe glanced at the track. The cars were going past the first turn. Without a word of explanation, Joe grabbed Seth’s headset.

"Hey!" Seth yelled.

Joe got on the headset and tried to talk to Jeremy, but the headset wasn’t working. He handed it back to Seth and said, "Trouble’s brewing."

"What kind of trouble?"

"Jeremy is going to be wrecked."

"How do you know?"

Joe ignored Seth’s question realizing he needed to find a way to get in touch with Jeremy. He quickly thought about talking to Aaron. Without a word, he turned and made his way along pit road.

He found the team and quickly got the attention of the crew chief. He quickly explained what was happening and Joe was handed a headset.

Joe quickly got on the headset and started talking with Aaron.

"You need to warn Jeremy somehow. He needs to stay away from David. He’s in danger."

"I’ll take care of it," Aaron said.

Joe handed the headset back as he watched Aaron move up right behind Jeremy. He also saw David was right behind Aaron. All three were grouped together.

As they continued around the track, Joe saw David trying to get around Aaron, but Aaron was holding him off.

The three cars went into the second turn. David got behind Aaron and bumped him, making enough room to get past. Now, David was right behind Jeremy. David rammed Jeremy’s car. Jeremy was struggling to keep it on the track. David rammed Jeremy again as they approached the third turn. As they exited the turn, Jeremy was rammed again and he lost control of the car.

The back end of the car spun around and slammed into the wall. The car coasted for a moment, then finally stopped as the other cars roared past.

Joe saw the net go down on Jeremy’s car and knew he was all right. Aaron pulled up behind Jeremy and got out of his car.

Tow trucks pulled out onto the track and moved to Jeremy’s car. The car was hooked up and Jeremy walked to the pits. Joe waited for Jeremy.

When Jeremy reached him, Joe asked, "Are you all right?"

"I am," Jeremy admitted. "I’m just disappointed. I was doing so well." He let out a breath. "I guess that’s it for me."

"David was hitting you on purpose," Joe said.

"What?"

Joe quickly filled Jeremy in with what was going on. When he was finished, Jeremy was stunned.

"I can’t believe it," Jeremy said. "I’m going to get him."

Several cars pulled onto pit road and they saw David come behind the pit wall. The front end of David’s car was heavily damaged. David got out of the car, slipped his helmet off and dropped it into the car. He turned toward them and stopped short.

As they got closer to David, he leaned against his car crossing his arms in front of his chest. "What happened, Jeremy? Did you lose control of your car?"

"You rammed me," Jeremy said angrily. "You did it on purpose."

"That’s not true," David said.

Jeremy stepped toward David, but Joe grabbed him by the arm and held him back. Joe said, "David will get what’s coming to him."

"Nothing will happen to me."

Joe decided to bluff David into revealing more than he wanted to. "Maybe you’re right. Maybe nothing will happen to you, but you should know, Mitchell is already telling the police everything. It’s just a matter of time until the police come looking for you."

"The police have nothing," David said.

"The police have kidnapping," Joe stated.

David stared at him and Joe knew he had hit a nerve. Joe continued on. "It’ll be easy to pin the kidnapping on you. Everyone knows you’re involved and Frank will identify you when he gets here."

"Frank can’t tell them anything," David said nervously. "You haven’t got a clue as to where he is."

At that moment, Seth hurried up to the, He said. "We found something interesting."

"You couldn’t have," David said. "Frank was hidden well in the car."

Joe’s eyes went wide realizing Frank had been hidden in Jeremy’s car. Joe grabbed David by the race suit as he realized he had given it away.

"Seth, get security," Joe said.

As Seth hurried off, Joe tightened his hold on David as they made their way to Jeremy’s car. They reached the trailer just as the car was about to be loaded inside.

"Hang on," Joe said to Michael.

"How come?" Michael asked.

"Joe’s brother is in the car," Jeremy said.

Michael looked at them skeptically.

Joe put his nose in David’s face. "Where is he?" David remained silent. Joe lifted David by the shirt and slammed him into the side of the trailer. "Tell me!"

"In the trunk," David whimpered. "In the trunk."

The crew moved to the trunk of the car and opened the lid as Joe lowered David to the ground. He moved to the trunk keeping a tight hold on David. He looked in the trunk and saw Frank unconscious, tied up and gagged.
