Jim and Fenton turned around. Fenton
exclaimed, "What are you doing here?"
"I tried to reach you with the information I found, but your phone went right to voice mail." "Come on over," Fenton said motioning to him. "Have a seat so you know what’s going on." Frank moved over beside him and sat down as Jim occupied the chair behind the desk. Frank looked at his father expectantly and realized there were no bruises on his face. He figured it must have been the dirt on the window he had seen. "What did you find?" Fenton asked. "Well, I did find out about Mr. Witherow’s history and his connection to Mr. Dilmer." "That was so long ago," Jim said. "But I don’t hold anything against him. He did his job and I served my time for what I’d done wrong." "The you weren’t involved?" Frank asked, completely confused. "We’ve figured it out," Fenton said. "We’ve been talking and have information that leads us to believe that a couple people from Jim’s staff were involved." "I don’t understand," Frank admitted. "Why would a couple of your staff members cause an avalanche?" "The two people I am thinking about have very short fuses and were recently let go from the company because of their attitude," Jim explained. "They had been running charters up to the lodge and the passengers started complaining. The last complaint came a few days before the avalanche when the lodge guests returned here to catch another flight." "What were the complaints?" Frank asked. "Most of them were about the flights being too rough and the pilots not paying attention to what they were doing," Jim said. "And I witnessed it on several occasions. It got to a point where they were putting the company in danger as well as the passengers. So, I let them go." "Why do you think they were behind the cause of the avalanche?" "I didn’t think about it the day we arrived and saw the damage. My only concern was helping everyone who was injured." "Tell him what gave you a clue," Fenton said. "Well, a few days before I tool your father to the lodge, I had gone into town to get some supplies. I was gone for several hours. When I returned, two of the helicopters had been moved. No one remembered seeing anything, but I do have my suspects." "So, you figure these people are the ones responsible?" Fenton asked, "I really do." Frank had an uneasy feeling and couldn’t shake it as the phone on Jim’s desk rang. As Jim set the phone down a moment later, he said, "You’ll have to excuse me for a moment. One of the mechanics is having some trouble with an engine." "We understand." Jim left the office closing the door behind him. "Dad, I found some interesting news," Frank said once they were alone. "Like what?" Fenton asked. "Well, Jim spent some time in jail when he was in his twenties. Be he was released after eight years for good behavior." "What did he go to jail for?" Fenton asked. "Robbery," Frank replied. "But there’s something wrong with all this." "What do you mean?" "There’s something about Jim coming forward telling you about his suspects that just doesn’t seem right. It doesn’t seem right that if he knew they were involved that he didn’t go to the authorities right away." "Maybe the authorities already know." They turned to see Jim standing there with a gun pointed at them. But he wasn’t alone. Two men were standing on either side of Jim. One held a gasoline can and the other a box of matches. Frank and Fenton knew they were in trouble.
