CHAPTER 14

Unbeknownst even to the man, Steven Miles, Phil was coming to see Frank and Joe and overheard his conversation, "Hey mister, cell-phones aren't allowed to be used on this floor," Phil said, raising an eyebrow to let him know he heard every word.

Knowing his plans wouldn't succeed, and not foolish enough to put his neck on the line for his greedy boss, he split. 'Let Milt do his own dirty work.' He took off out of the hospital and quickly headed back to work with the gang leader who he really worked for.

Phil quickly called the police and filled the police in on what they heard, Con called Fenton to let him know that Frank was a possible target for these people. "I'm coming back," Fenton told them, furious that this greedy person thought they could get away with this.

Milt Landers hung up the phone, furious, "Is there no loyalty!"

"Evidently not!" Callie spat. "You were never loyal to my father!"

"So what!" Milt spat out. "Those were my ideas!"

"No, they were your sisters," Callie replied. "And Andrea is still a trusted employee."

"So how would you know?!" Milt accused.

"Andrea told me," Callie answered. "It always saddened him that you were always competing with him."

"If Dad had treated us equally, none of this would have happened," Milt said, not sure why he was telling her this.

"From what I've heard," Callie interjected, as she and Andrea had been close ever since she was 12. "He did, you just wanted your way."

"That's bologna," Milt said. "If he wants me to handle this myself, then I'll get your boyfriend and his brother. How about that? I hear they were hurt."

"You didn't?!" Callie paled, guilt washing over her for fear of what happened to Frank and his brother.

"Yes, I enjoyed it," Milt said. "Maybe a life of crime is where I was meant to be!"

Callie stared at Milt, terrified that Frank and Joe were seriously hurt. She remembered heading to the post-prom party in the limousine, talking and having a good time, but she didn't remember the accident. She was so worried that Frank was badly injured and she couldn't be there with him.

"I can see you are truly worried about your boyfriend," Milt said. "But you shouldn't. Soon, everything will be taken care of and your father will know how serious I am about getting what I truly deserve and am owed."

"Why did you have to go to this extreme?" Callie asked. She had been hanging around Frank and Joe enough to know when to ask questions and to gather as much information as possible so it could be used later.

"Because I knew there would be no other way." Milt looked her in the eye. "Don't worry so much. As long as your father follows my instructions, things will be just fine."

Milt turned and left the room. As Callie watched him go, she wondered if things would turn out just fine.
