Splash Page:  Frank paused in his thoughts, frowning, a stray whiff of something coming to him. He sniffed again... "Smoke," he said aloud, slowly. "Smoke- the fires! The prairie wildfires-" He scrambled to his feet and was up the ladder as fast as he could go. But when he reached the shanty door, he stopped and stared in terror.

A band of fire seemed to stretch the length of the horizon; he could see the dull red flames beneath the thick clouds of black smoke. Wind gusted into his face and he felt sweat gather on his forehead as he realized the storm winds were driving the monster blaze right at him. "The chopper. Whoever was in the chopper set it," he whispered. "Got to get out of here-" The cabin was old dry wood; it would go up as fast as the grass. "But where?!" The flames would soon catch up to him if he tried to outrun it. There was only one possibility; he could try to get past the leading edge and get around behind it.
