That
night, they made their way to the docks.
Laura had been very angry with Fenton for allowing Jay to put her
life at risk and Callie and Vanessa had agreed with Laura that this was
much too dangerous. But Joe,
Frank, Fenton and Jay had finally convinced them.
Neither Fenton, Frank or Joe wanted to put Jay in danger either,
but it was the only way to stop these men and protect their family.
After
they had arrived four blocks from the docks, they stopped and got ready.
Fenton had made Jay put on a microphone, so they could hear what
was going on at all time. Jay
showed them where they could enter.
When she asked the security guard if he thought it would rain
that would me the signal for them to go.
Before
Jay left them, Joe pulled her to the side.
He had to make sure she was ready for this.
“Are
you sure you want to do this?” asked Joe worriedly.
“Yes,
I’m sure,” said Jay.
“If
anything scares you or something is bothering you, then call us
immediately. I promise you,
we will be there in a blink of an eye,” said Joe.
Jay
nodded her head. She was
still a little nervous around open displays of concern and affection
like this, but she knew that the Hardy’s accepted her and made her
feel like part of the family. Joe
patted her on the back and told her to go on inside to the docks, but
before she left Frank and Fenton whispered for her to come over.
“We
wanted you to know how much we appreciate this, but don’t feel like
you have to do this,” said Fenton.
“And we
want you to be careful and call us immediately when you need us,” said
Frank.
Joe and
Frank gave each other a look, which said exactly how they felt.
They had silently agreed that if anyone tried to hurt their new
‘little sister’, they would have to deal with them too.
They were going to protect Jay at all costs.
Jay
approached the huge tower in the middle of the shipyard’s entrance.
In the tower, the guard could see everything.
They had security cameras all around, so the guard watched it
all. One of the guards
flashed the lights on the outside of the booth.
It was a signal for Jay to come up.
She went up in the tower, a little nervous.
She was also excited.
“Hey,
guys,” said Jay.
“Well,
look who came to see us, Bob,” said the guard in front of the
monitors, recognizing Jay. He smiled at her warmly.
Bob
turned and looked at Jay. He
smiled and said, “Hey, sweetie,” said Bob.
“Did you come to see us old men?”
“You
aren’t old Bob. Maybe
Ralph is, but not you,” said Jay teasingly to the men, trying to draw
them out.
Ralph
turned and glared at her. He
couldn’t keep a straight face. He
was laughing so hard his jaw started hurting.
The three
started talking about different things, but nothing important.
So much so, that they forgot to watch the the grounds.
That is when Jay slipped the signal question in to the
conversation.
“Do you
think it will rain?” said Jay.
“Nah,”
said Bob. “That’s just
Ralph’s new cologne that is making your eyes water.”
“I am
not wearing any cologne,” said Ralph glaring at Bob.
“That’s
worse,” said Bob.
“You
are so cruel, Bob,” said Jay. “Quit
picking on poor Ralph.”
“Yeah,
quit picking on me,” said Ralph pouting.
“Hey,
is there any work to do?” asked Jay changing the subject.
“There’s
some,” said Bob.
“I
think there is four maybe five boats working tonight,” said Ralph.
“Why don’t you go find out?”
“Thanks,
guys,” said Jay. “Where
are they?”
Ralph
pointed them out to her through the glass in the tower.
She said good-bye and headed toward the docks.
At the first two, the shipments were just ordinary.
But at the third, she didn’t recognize the men working there.
When she asked if they needed help, they told her to get lost and
one of the men pushed her back into the crates, because he didn’t
think she was moving fast enough.
From
their vantage point further away, Joe started to fume. Frank had to grab
Joe’s arm and Fenton grabbed the other arm to hold him back.
Frank used to wonder where Joe got his temper, but he knew it was
from their father. Looking
over, he could see that his dad was also having trouble controlling that
temper, although outwardly he kept his cool.
Frank
nodded his head toward Jay and said, “Look, Jay is okay.
See, she is getting up.”
One of
the skills Jay learned when living on the streets was the ability to
conceal her movements. She
slipped an item from the broken crate into her pocket, hoping that it
was what they were looking for.
Out loud
she said “Okay, I’m leaving.”
She walked away and went behind one of the warehouses, so the men
from that dock could not see her. The
problem was that the Hardy’s could not see her either.
Jay was able to examine the item more closely.
It was one of the computer chips.
She had found the dock.
Jay
quietly headed back to the docks, away from the smugglers and closer to
the Hardy’s. She was as silent as possible.
Suddenly
a powerful arm grabbed her from behind.
Jay struggled to free herself, but to no avail.
He had her tight.
“So
if it isn’t my little cave gal,” said the man.
When she was able to see him, she realized it was Mac. She fought harder, but it was no use as the man gagged her mouth and pushed her to the edge of the dock. He took a rope and tied her hands and feet, then picked her up in his arms.
“It
was nice knowing you, but you have to leave for good.”
Laughing, Mac looked down at the water and said, “I hope you
have a nice swim.” Then he threw her into the water!
