The Chapters |
Six
months later, the bad guys were in jail. And the Hardy family was back
to their routine with one very notable exception.
They had
a new member to the family.
Jay was
well on the way to recovery both physically and mentally.
She had taken the high schools equivalency exams and aced them.
As a result of this and on the recommendation of the high school
counselor, she had told them to let Jay go ahead and enter college.
And as
always her newly adopted ‘brothers’ were on hand to help her every
step of the way. Frank was helping her get ready for her college
entrance exam and Joe was helping her exercise to keep her body from
getting stiff and sore after the surgery.
Fenton
too had been true to his word. She
received her social security number, and when she got better he told her
she would be able to get a proper drivers license in her own name.
More than
anything however, she felt safe, maybe for the first time in her life.
She had a new family, and even a new name, Jayne, reflecting her
old life and changing ever so slightly to reflect her new one. Suddenly
she was actually looking forward to getting up in the mornings, the days
were full of opportunity, not of pain, and her life was only going to
get better.
Jay knew
that she had a lot to learn, but she also knew that she had people who
would help her every step of the way.
She also started writing a journal as a way of dealing with the
ghosts from her past and to help her face the new challenges being
presented to her everyday.
One
Sunday afternoon, everyone was at the Hardy household, having a family
barbecue. Frank and Joe were
splashing each other in the pool. Fenton
and Laura were cooking on the grill.
Callie and Vanessa were sunning and laughing at Frank and Joe.
Jay
sighed deeply everything was perfect she thought.
She looked at everyone and smiled.
She was near the picnic table under the parasol with her books
around her. She leaned her
head back and closed her eyes. Before
she realized it, she was asleep.
“Joe,
look at Jay,” whispered Frank.
“Is
she asleep?” asked Joe quietly as he could manage.
“Yes,
I think she is,” said Frank.
Joe
walked over to Jay, he couldn’t help reading one or two of the lines
that she had scribbled on her journal;
True
love is an extraordinary gift that is always given never taken, always
gloriously patient and never fails. Love
is a power that can never be made or forced.
But it is something that we truly desire to be ours forever.
Frank
walked up behind him. He read
over Joe’s shoulder.
“She
should be a writer,” said Joe.
“Or
a poet,” said Frank. “I
love you, little brother.”
“I
love you, big brother,” said Joe smiling.
“You think she’s okay right here?”
“Yeah,”
said Frank. “She is at
peace.”
Frank
and Joe finally understood that life itself is the great adventure and
love the ultimate prize. They
felt as if they were rich beyond their dreams.
Frank
gave Joe a devious smile. Joe
knew he was up to something. Frank
suddenly grabbed Joe and pushed him into the pool.
But Joe was ready for him, so he dragged Frank in with him.
Callie and Vanessa soon joined the two and they were all playing.
Fenton
and Laura sitting by the grill were watching the foursome, laughing.
Their family was safe and together.
