CHAPTER 16

"You talked to him," C. J. asked, "How? When?"

"This morning," Joe answered, "He walked in when we were searching his apartment. We had a chance to talk to him."

"He’s being forced into this deal," Frank continued, "Again I’m not sure if he’ll talk to the police. We’ll have to figure out how to get him into the open."

"Where does he work," Vicki asked, "Maybe we can get him there."

"He mentioned working for ‘Fast Express’ until he could find a better job," Joe told them, "I’m sure we’ll find him there tomorrow."

"C. J," Vicki said, "I want you to call Justin and have him meet us here tomorrow morning." During the whole conversation, Chief Stevens had been listening in confusion. Now, he turned and left the room since he had momentarily been forgotten.

"Why," C. J. asked in surprise, "How will that help bring Michael into the open?"

"Just do it," Vicki answered, "I don’t have time to say now. I have a lot of planning to do. Tell him to come at nine tomorrow."

"What about us," Joe questioned, "What are we supposed to do during all this?"

"You’re going to be back at the apartment," Vicki replied and C. J. went to call Justin, "Find out what exactly is going on, but let him know you were there."

C. J. walked back into the room, "He’ll be here in the morning. He doesn’t know why, but he will."

"Great," Vicki replied, "Let’s form the plan out tonight."

Exactly at nine, Justin’s van pulled into the driveway. He knocked on the door and Vicki rushed to answer it. C. J. was right behind her.

"Let’s go," Vicki exclaimed, "Justin, can you drive us to ‘Fast Express’? We can’t use the convertible and C. J’s van is still at the lake."

"Sure," Justin replied, confused as to why they had called him the night before, "but can you tell me what we’re doing?"

"You’ll see," C. J. said quickly, "We need to get over there as soon as possible. It’s an emergency." The two ran out the front door, closing it behind them. Justin stood there a second more and slowly walked to his van.

When they parked in front of the building, all three of them stepped out and inside. Vicki and C. J. looked around and spotted the guy who had helped them the day before behind the counter. His hat was still pulled down low over his eyes and when they walked up, gave no sign of recognition.

"Can I help you," he asked as they approached them.

"I believe you can," Vicki replied, "We’re looking for a Michael Ice who works here. We need to speak with him."

"I’m sorry," the man stammered, "No one that works here has that name. You’ve come to the wrong place."

"I don’t think we have," Vicki told him, "Please Michael, we need to talk to you. It’s very important. It might crack this case."

"Besides," C. J. added, "There’s someone we want you to meet."

"I’m not supposed to reveal who I really am," Michael confessed, since it was evident that his secret was out, "Please go. I don’t care who I’m supposed to meet."

"But it’s your brother," Vicki told him, "Do you remember Justin? He’s right over there." She pointed off to some seats a few feet away.

Michael seemed stunned for a few moments. "That’s," he stopped, "that’s my brother? But how…?"

"He’s my boyfriend," C. J. answered his question, "He only heard about you a few days ago."

"No," Michael said and backed away, "I can’t talk to him."

"Why not," C. J. asked and glanced at Vicki.

"I just can’t," Michael replied, "You have no idea what would happen if they found out."

"What would happen if they found out," C. J. asked, "Will you at least answer that?"

"They would do something to him," he answered, "I know they would. I just couldn’t risk something happening. He’s my brother…you know…I wouldn’t put him at risk if I had a choice."

"Who are they," Vicki asked, "If we can catch them, maybe we could put a stop to what they’re doing to you."

"You have to go," Michael insisted, looking over their shoulders. They didn’t move, "If you won’t leave for me, leave for Justin. Please?"

"No," C. J. answered, "We need to know what’s going on and we need to know now. Something seriously wrong is happening here."

"If you leave now," Michael told them, "I’ll meet you at the Ultimate during my lunch break, I promise. Just go." The girls agreed and walked away.
