CHAPTER 16

Before Vicki could get up, someone hauled her to her feet. She looked up at the man who was now gripping her by the arm. He didn’t look much older than twenty with his black hair and green eyes, but something about him looked familiar and made Vicki uncomfortable. Unnoticed to her friends, he put a slip of paper into her jacket pocket and pushed her back down. Then he raced away.

"Are you okay," C. J. skated over, with Frank and Joe right behind her. Vicki nodded.

"I’m fine," Vicki replied, "The whole thing was an accident. He wasn’t watching where he was going and rammed into me."

"What do you mean," Joe started to ask, "That guy ran you down."

"It was an accident," Vicki said, louder this time. Then she added in a lower voice, "I’ll tell you about it later. I can’t talk about it right now."

Everyone remained silent, now knowing the meaning. They stayed for a few more minutes and then headed out again. When they reached the van, C. J. turned to her friend.

"Okay, what really happened back there," she asked. Vicki didn’t answer right away, but instead reached into her jacket pocket, "What are you doing?"

Vicki pulled out the white piece of paper, "Calm down," she said, "That man who pushed me down, he slipped this into my pocket when you weren’t looking…but he made sure I noticed." She opened it carefully and read it out loud, "It says ‘A push over the edge can result in far worse results. Diamonds don’t last forever.’ I wonder what that means."

"Do you think there’s a chance of there being fingerprints on it," Joe asked her.

"No," Vicki replied, "He was wearing gloves if I remember correctly. I could see his face clearly though." She told the group his description, "I’m guessing that he wanted the ring but left the note instead."

"Wait," C. J. suddenly exclaimed, "What about the ring? Do you still have it?" Vicki reached into another pocket and pulled out the small box, which concealed the ring. She opened it. It was still there.

"So you think they were talking about the ring," Vicki asked, "Do you think they want it…or was that the person the one who gave it to me in the first place?"

"It seems to me," Frank said, "That they wanted to take it. I don’t think that whoever wanted you to hold it for them would try to steal it back." Joe nodded in agreement.

"But how did they know we had it," C. J. asked, "We only got it this morning. We don’t know anything about the case."

"Who knows," Vicki said, "That’s why we have to figure out what’s going on? We know one thing, they clearly know about our reputations and our descriptions."

C. J. pulled into her driveway just then and they piled out. Becky’s car wasn’t two houses down, which was a good sign and Vicki’s parents had to leave for some business and weren’t at home. C. J.’s house was dark also, her parents gone to dinner and having no brothers or sisters.

"What do you think we should do," Joe asked, "We’ll clearly have to be on the lookout while we’re here. If only we knew who to look out for."

"Can I see those notes," Frank asked and Vicki handed them to him. Then he studied them closely, examining first one than the other, "It looks like there are two different people after this ring. One to keep it safe, and another to steal it."

"There is one thing we can do," Vicki said suddenly, "Since I know what this guy looks like, maybe we can identify him in the Chief’s files. It’s worth a shot."

Several minutes later, the four were at the police station. They had been led to a back room, where they could look at the pictures in silence. Even though the others hadn’t seen the man clearly, they all helped look through them. Chief Stevens then left them alone.

C. J. was the first to speak up, "Are you sure about your description? Black hair, green eyes, early twenties?" It sounded as if she was afraid of the answer.

"Yeah," Vicki said, looking up, "Did you find something? Let me see." C. J. reluctantly slid the file across the table and Vicki glanced at the paper, "Oh, I see what you mean."

"What is it," Frank asked, sounding slightly confused at her tone, "Is something wrong?"

"You could say that," Vicki answered, "It all depends on if what I see is real. This is the man I saw though, there’s no doubt about that."

"I don’t understand," Frank said, "It all depends on if what is real?" Both he and Joe stared at the girls questioningly.

"Look at this picture," C. J. said, "Do you see the name at the bottom?" The name was Michael Ice and he matched the description of the man mentioned earlier.

"What about it," Joe asked, "Will you just tell us already?"

C. J. sighed and turned to Vicki, "You see, the thing is that he looks almost exactly like Justin, my boyfriend. He even has the same last name. What also bothers me is that he just got out a few months ago and Justin never mentioned having an older brother, but the information is almost the same."
