When the man finally reached them, the three teens tensed, ready for anything. What happened next surprised them though, "C. J. Summers," he asked, "I’m so glad I’ve finally had a chance to meet you. Listen, you have to help me out. It’s the only way to get your friends back." "Okay," C. J. said, stepping back a bit, "First of all, who are you? Second, why should we trust you?" "I’m Kyle Gomez," the man introduced himself, "I should have explained earlier that I’m working undercover…for Mr. Hardy." "You mean that you’ve been helping us all this time," C. J. asked, "Why didn’t you stop this from happening?" "I never knew that they planned to kidnap Vicki," Mr. Gomez explained, "And even if I did, I couldn’t risk giving away my cover." He finally seemed to acknowledge the boys, "You two must be Frank and Joe Hardy. You look just like the descriptions your father has given of you." "Sorry," Joe Clark said, "I’m a Joe, but not Joe Hardy. I’m Vicki’s boyfriend. This is Frank Hardy though." "Back to what you were saying though," Frank said, "What can we do to help?" "Okay," Mr. Gomez said, "Here’s the plan…" Vicki sat up in the darkened room and turned in her flashlight. The watch on her wrist said it was only twenty after ten. Whether it was morning or night, she didn’t know. A quiet knocking sound drew her attention over to the wall, where Joe had returned to keep searching for a secret passage. "Give it up Joe," she told him, "You’ve checked that wall a hundred times already. We’ll just have to hope that someone will find us." "I’m not giving up that easily," Joe said back, "I plan on making something of our time in here." "I’m not giving up," Vicki snapped, "I just think there’s another way out of here except for hoping that a magical door will appear in the wall." "Wait," Joe suddenly said, "I think something’s giving in the wall." Vicki jumped up and ran over. Joe looked down at her, "I thought that might get you off your feet." "Ha," Vicki said sarcastically, "I’m glad you’ve still got your sense of humor. I seem to have lost mine. Being in a small isolated room for days can do that to you." Instead of the response she expected, Vicki was surprised when Joe started laughing. "What’s so funny," Vicki asked, "Are you okay?" "Yeah," he responded, "It’s just that this whole situation reminds me of when we first met. Remember?" "How could I not," Vicki replied, "We got into this huge fight over something that could have been avoided if you hadn’t jumped me." "You always try to find a way to remind me," Joe said, "It’s not my fault that you were at the right place at the wrong time." Vicki was about to answer him when a sound from above interrupted her. A scream from upstairs echoed into the passage! C. J. waited for the right time before following instructions. She might have been the smart one, but she could scream pretty well. After exactly ten minutes after given instructions, she let out her best. The sound of footsteps greeted her from inside the room with the secret entrance. She gave Frank and Joe their cue. The exact moment the men ran into the hallway, Frank and Joe circled up, as if they were about to fight, "What is going on here," one man asked. "Stop it," C. J. playacted, "Come on guys. Stop!" "Stay out of it," Joe Clark said, "This is between me and him." "I don’t know what happened," C. J. answered the man, "They just started fighting for no reason. I don't know what to do." "What are you kids doing here anyway," the man snapped, "I thought the premises had been cleared." Two men stepped forward to stop the fake fight just as Frank and Joe threw their first punches. Seemingly accidental, the punches missed and they knocked out the men instead. "Look what you did now," Frank told Joe, "Now we’ll really be in trouble. Thanks to you!" While the men were now distracted with the fight, C. J. sneaked quietly behind another man. Without any warning, she slipped a foot behind one of his and pulled. The guy fell to the ground. Frank and Joe then turned from their fight to join in. The men were caught completely by surprise and could do nothing to stop it. Vicki and Joe heard the screams end abruptly. They jumped though, as the door to their cell flew open. "Come on," the guy behind the door said, "I need to get you out of here." The two didn’t argue, but rushed out of the door. The man led them to the secret passage entrance and they then climbed up a series of stairs. When they got to the top, a strange sight greeted them. Some men had gotten into a huge fight. Minutes later though, the men had all been taken into custody when the police arrived. Mr. Silver was right behind them. "Vicki," he exclaimed when he saw her, "I’m so glad you’re okay after all you had to go through. Don’t worry though. These men are under arrest for price-fixing and kidnapping. They won’t be getting out for a long time." Joe Hardy handed a small box to Mr. Gomez. "This is the evidence you’ll need to back up the rest of the case." "That good to know," Vicki replied, "Dad, can you let go now?" Mr. Silver stepped back for a moment, "Thank you." A sudden tap on the shoulder made Vicki look around. Joe Clark was standing there. "I thought you might want this back," Joe Clark said, and held out the necklace that he had given her earlier. "Joe," Vicki said, "How did you get here?" She slipped the necklace back on. "I had to help out," he answered, "You know that. We just flew in yesterday morning." C. J. ran up then and met Vicki with a hug. "What is this," Vicki joked, "A family reunion or something? I’ve never had so many people hug me before." "How about we all head back home," Mr. Silver suggested, "Then we can all get caught up." "Yeah, about that," Vicki stopped them, "Can I make a change in your plans?" "Like what," Mr. Silver asked. "Let’s get caught up at a restaurant in town instead," she replied, "I don’t know about you, but I’m starving." "All in favor say ‘aye’," Joe Clark announced. "Aye," everyone said in unison and they all walked down the hallway and out of the building. |
