CHAPTER 16

"Let’s go," C. J. said, "My parents are out of town this week. I’ll just leave a message for them on the machine when we arrive. Give me one minute and I’ll pack."

She rushed upstairs and was back in exactly the amount of time she had said. Frank and Joe looked at her in astonishment, "What," she asked, "I told you it would only take a minute." C. J. laughed and lifted her suitcase and walked outside, "We’re taking my van and I’m driving."

"Got it," Frank said, "Come on Joe. It looks like we’re starting a case in San Antonio. We haven’t had much time to do much anyway."

The three raced out to the van and C. J. shoved her stuff into the back and climbed in, "We’re going immediately to the airport," C. J. said, "Maybe we can catch one of the flights and get started."

"Good idea," Joe said, "Maybe if we’re lucky, something will come up." Everyone grew silent afterwards and C. J. pulled out of the drive. Hopefully, they would be in time for the 8:07 flight.

Luckily, there were some seats available and they hurriedly boarded the plan after going through security.

"Isn’t it strange how these were the only seats available and exactly the amount we needed? And that this was the only flight with openings?" C. J. asked as they boarded.

"It was strange," Frank said, "but I’m glad we got them."

C. J. somehow ended up with the window seat and Frank the aisle. Joe was stuck in the middle.

"How did I end up in this seat," Joe asked, annoyed, "Is it some rule that I have to sit in the middle all the time?"

"I guess so," C. J. replied, "but if you must know why you got stuck there, it’s because while you were flirting with the girl behind us, Frank and I were telling the ticket seller our seat assignments. That’s how you got left the middle. "I should have known," Joe said, "My own brother wouldn’t even consider letting me have the aisle seat, because he thought that I wasn’t paying attention."

"Were you," Frank asked, turning to his younger brother.

"No," Joe replied, "but I was hoping you would trade me spots if you thought I was."

"Try again," Frank replied, "Maybe C. J. would trade you." The brothers turned to C. J.

"What," C. J. asked as if they were crazy, "Why would I do that? Besides, I just love seeing Joe not getting his way all the time." She turned to look out the window as they took off. Joe still looked annoyed as they lifted off the ground.

Minutes later, C. J. leaned forward to grab a magazine from behind the seat in front of her. She pulled one out and flipped through it slowly. Suddenly she stopped going through the pages. There was a note left inside. C. J. wondered if this could have anything to do with the case.

"Frank," she asked, leaning over Joe and turned to him, "Look what I found in the magazine I was reading." Frank glanced over.

"What is it," he asked, "Have you opened it yet?"

"I’m about to," C. J. replied, and unfolded the note. Another set of times was printed inside! "It’s another time page." It read:

4:28

5:41

9:34

2:24

7:00

6:27

8:12

11:45

3:38

1:50

C. J. then handed it to Frank, "What kind of schedule is this?"

He shrugged, "I don’t know, but I hope it’s not another plane. It might be a bus, train, subway, or even a boat. Whoever left this here must have known that we’d be on this flight."

"Who is it," C. J. asked, "That’s what I’m wondering about right now. I didn’t notice anyone sneaking around or looking out-of-place, did you?"

"No," Frank answered, "but that’s partially what bothers me. This person wants to help us out, but they won’t show themselves. Wouldn’t that bother you?"

"I guess so," C. J. replied, "now that you brought it up. Anyone on this plane could be behind this."

About four hours later, the three got off the plane. Then they sat and watched all the people exit. Joe had been filled in on the details of the note, since he had been asleep during their conversation, as much as he complained about being stuck in the middle.

No one seemed suspicious to them though and they hailed a taxi to take them to the nearest hotel. After getting to the hotel and paying for two rooms, they walked up and put their stuff away.

C. J. came over to Frank and Joe’s room and brought out the paper, "What do you make of it," she asked Joe now, since he hadn’t looked at it yet. Joe took the sheet and glanced over it quickly.

"It’s definitely a schedule of some kind," Joe agreed with them, "but what kind. There must be more ways of transportation here."

C. J. reached out to take the paper, but accidentally dropped it. As she picked it up however, she noticed writing on the back, "Look at this," she exclaimed, "There are more numbers on the back!"
