Because of the fire, Kara agreed to let the girls stay in her tent. Luckily, no one asked for an explanation, the girls wouldn’t have been able to answer anyway. It seemed impossible that anyone would believe their story. There was no sign of Jim around anywhere, whether that was a good or bad thing, the girls didn’t know. Early in the morning, everyone got up and packed for the hike ahead of them. The weather had warmed up since the previous night so the plans for mountain climbing were working out great. "I saw what happened last night," Steve said, walking up to them, "Are you girls okay?" Vicki and C. J. nodded. "Yeah, we’re fine," Vicki replied, "I’m just glad we’re still here now. I don’t know what’s going on." "It was pretty strange," Steve agreed, "Who would want to target you two?" "Don’t know," C. J. said, "I can only be glad that whoever it was missed their target." "Could it be because of your background," Steve asked, lowering his voice, "Could someone be after you because of that?" The girls risked a glance at each other before answering. "Do you mind if we don’t answer that," Vicki asked, "We wouldn’t want anything getting out about us being detectives and all that." "No problem," Steve answered, putting a hand on her sympathetically, "I’m not going to push you. I just wanted to help." "We know," Vicki told him. He then walked away, searching for Kara in the crowd, "What was that about?" "He’s starting to move up on the suspect list," C. J. said, "Since when has he been interested in our work before? Something’s going on with him." "I know that Steve used to be really quiet around us," Vicki said, "When he started acting like that, something just didn’t seem to fit right." Both Vicki and C. J. glanced up when Brian announced that the group was moving on. Frank and Joe stayed at the back of the group with the girls. The woods were beginning to look more sinister than they ever had before. Knowing that someone was out there, trying to kill them from behind the foliage and bushes was enough to make them keep up their guard. The guys seemed to be doing exactly the same thing. In fact, most of the campers were more than a little nervous because of the occurrence the night before. "We have to catch this guy tonight," C. J. whispered over to Vicki, "After that, he’ll have every chance open to get at us." Vicki silently agreed with her friend. "We’ll need a plan," Joe whispered to them. "We don’t need a plan," Vicki whispered back, "He has to make the first move against us…and we wing it after that."
A few hours later, they stopped at the top of the cliff. Getting up was the easy part though, the hard part was going down. Brian quickly showed everyone how to get their rappelling equipment on. Within minutes, Vicki and Kara had their gear on and were ready to go. "Okay you two," Brian called, gesturing to them, "You will be our demonstrators. Show the rest of us what to do? Have you girls ever done this before?" Both girls nodded, "Good, this will be easy for you then." The girls threw their ropes over the edge of the cliff and hooked themselves on. Luckily, many handholds and footholds were visible in case there was a problem. With everything that had been going on, Vicki was taking every precaution. The group gathered around them, and Vicki noticed Steve near the front. "Be careful," C. J. whispered to Vicki, "Watch out for any tricks." Vicki nodded and positioned herself for the climb down. Then Kara and Vicki set off. "I didn’t know that you’ve done this before," Vicki told Kara, "Why didn’t you mention anything about it?" "Didn’t think it was too important," Kara answered, "There’s no point in showing off and making the others look bad." "True," Vicki agreed, "but you’ve acted like you’ve never done this sort of thing before. I know that you knew Brian beforehand, but I thought that was because of something else." "It was," Kara answered, "We used to date, but we broke up. We’re still good friends though, as rare as it is." They continued down more, becoming more careful of their footing. Suddenly Kara stopped and turned to Vicki, "I’m really sorry for what I’m about to do," Kara explained, "but it must be done." "What are you talking about," Vicki asked, looking puzzled. "There’s one thing I forgot to tell you about me," Kara answered, reaching into her pack, "My last name is Condo. Jim Condo is my father." She pulled out a small gun, "I hate to do this, but like I said, it must be done." She then aimed the gun at Vicki and there was no way she could miss. |
