"You’re the daughter of Jim Condo," Vicki asked Kara in astonishment, "Why would you ever want to be like him?" "He’s really a great man if you get to know him," Kara answered, "but you put him in prison, the last place he deserves to be. He didn’t do anything to you." "He tried to kill us," Vicki answered, "but let me guess. You helped him escape as well, right?" Kara nodded. "I’m surprised you didn’t see through my cover," Kara replied, "Playing all innocent and junk like that. I’m actually a horrible actress, how you didn’t catch it is beyond me." "I’m not a director, but it wasn’t easy to miss," Vicki said, "You didn’t know it but every minute you became more of a suspect." No matter what she said though, Vicki noticed that the gun was always trained on her. "Now no one will have a clue what happened," Kara told her, "It was a freak accident. Your rope somehow managed to fray apart, and you fell below to your death." "What do you expect C. J. to believe," Vicki asked, "She’ll know otherwise." "You see this gun," Kara asked, "There are six bullets inside. Two, maybe three for you, the other three, for your friends." "You’re just like your father," Vicki retorted, "and you’re the only person I least thought would be like that." "Times change," Kara said, "Now enough chit-chat, let’s get this over with." She slowly aimed the gun once more. Vicki knew that she must now make her move. Aiming a high kick, Vicki felt her foot connect with the gun the instant it went off. She quickly grabbed her arm though as the bullet grazed her shoulder. Suddenly she let go with her arm and fell out of sight. Kara smiled, seeming pleased with herself and climbed up, cutting the rope.
Vicki watched Kara climb up from her hiding spot. In that one instant, Vicki had spotted a ledge just below her feet. She could do her best work if Kara didn’t know she was alive. The grazed shoulder was real though, but Vicki knew she had to tough it out. Vicki pulled out her cell phone and dialed a familiar number. She always carried it in case of emergencies.
"Hello," Joe Hardy asked, answering his cell phone. "Joe, it’s Vicki," the voice came through, "Look Kara is against us. Jim Condo is her father. She just tried to kill me. She’s going to come up in a minute. Act like you believe every word she says about me being dead, okay?" "What are you talking about," Joe asked, moving away from the group. "She’s the one who’s been giving out C. J. and my positions to Jim Condo," Vicki explained, "Watch out though, she has a gun." "Are you okay," Joe asked upon hearing this information. "It’s only a graze," Vicki replied, "I’ll live. If you could send a rope down in a moment, can I get a lift up?" They quickly finished their conversation. Joe returned right when Kara got to the top. She appeared to be crying. "Guys, it’s Vicki," Kara said between sobs, "Her rope…it broke and she…fell. There’s no way she could have survived. I tried to help…but I couldn’t get there in time. It’s a long way down to the bottom." "Hold it right there," Steve said, coming up to the group, "What’s that?" He pointed to the bit of metal sticking out of her pocket. "Nothing," Kara answered, carefully taking off her equipment, "Nothing at all." "May I take a look then," Steve asked her. Upon hearing these words, Kara took off running. Unfortunately, she wasn’t fast enough. Steve caught up to her in seconds, and made her lay on the ground. He located the gun and pulled a pair of handcuffs out and snapped them on her. "What’s going on," Frank asked, running up. Steve didn’t answer. He instead reached into his pocket and pulled something out. It was a license for a private investigator. "I’ve been after the Condos for a while now," Steve answered, "I came here undercover to track them down since you seemed to be the only target. She’s being arrested for attempted murder." C. J. looked confused, "I managed to put a tracking device on Vicki earlier. It’s still moving, she’s alive." "You get her," Joe told C. J, "She called me on my cell phone. Frank and I can handle Condo." As if on cue, Jim Condo stepped out from the woods. Within minutes, Jim Condo had been caught. He hadn’t expected Frank and Joe to be there at that moment. Frank, Joe, and C. J. watched as he was being led away. Seconds later, Vicki joined them, "I can’t believe it was her all along," Vicki said, "She became one of our closest friends." "Not everyone is what they seem," C. J. said, "I’m sure we’re all just glad she’s in prison and you’re okay." "Yeah," Vicki said, holding her arm now, "How many friends must we lose trying to help everyone?" "A lot more than we lost already," C. J. said, "We just have to adjust. Right now though, we should get you to a hospital to get that checked out." "It’s only a graze," Vicki objected, "I’m not going to die C. J. There’s no need to go to that extreme." They walked on, arguing the whole way. "She’s more like you than I thought," Frank told his brother, "She’s been hanging around you too long." "That’s not necessarily a bad thing," Joe said, "I bet that’s why you like her." "Now there’s where you’re wrong," Frank protested and it continued from there. |
