Vicki sat up hours later and tried to see
into the darkness. Had it been her imagination or had someone just been
in there? She quickly woke C. J.
"What do you want," C. J. asked sleepily, "I was trying to sleep until someone disturbed me." "Did you zip up the tent flap," Vicki asked. "Yeah," C. J. replied, "Why do you need to know?" "Because it’s not now," Vicki said, seeing the sky outside from where the flap had been unzipped. C. J. sat up and saw that Vicki was right, "I think someone was in here." They sat in silence for a few moments, listening for a sign of anybody in the woods. Vicki moved to stand up when her hand brushed against a piece of paper, "What," she asked, glancing down. A note had been placed near her sleeping bag, "C. J. hand me the flashlight." C. J. handed it to her and Vicki quickly read the note. "Vick," C. J. asked, seeing her friend’s face pale a little, "What’s wrong?" Vicki simply handed her the note. "Do you remember me," she read, "Probably not, but I remember you. It’s time to take my revenge for what you did to me. I’d be watching my back if I were you. This is not a warning, it’s a request." She glanced back at Vicki, "Well, whoever this guy is, he’s about to get caught." "Know what really bothers me though," Vicki asked, "He’s talking like he knows us from somewhere we should remember. So he knows who we are, but we don’t know him." "Good thing Frank and Joe are on their way," C. J. said, "We need all the help we can get. This guy isn’t joking around with us." "I just hope they’ll be here soon," Vicki said, "We’ve worked with cases before, just not one on this scale…revenge."
Frank and Joe arrived in Maine within a few hours. Looking at the packet of information that Vicki had mailed them days before, they found the address of the building that was sponsoring the hike. Seeing that it wasn’t far, they walked over to it. It stood a few blocks away, on the edge of the woods. They entered and approached the front desk. "Excuse me," Frank said, "We’ve come for the hike you’re sponsoring." "I’m afraid you’re a little late," the girl behind the desk said, "They left two days ago. There’s not much I can do." "Can’t you find someone to take us," Joe asked her, giving her his best smile, "We’ve really been looking forward to this." The girl blushed under his glance and turned to her computer. "I might be able to help you," she said, "There’s one guy who knows the woods pretty well. But I’m not sure if he’s in right now." "Can you at least show us the route they took," Frank asked, interrupting his brother, "I’m sure we could make it from there fine." "You might be able to keep up with them," the girl said, "The rain will keep them off the trail for a little while. There’s even a shortcut you can take." "That should work," Joe said, "I’m just sorry you couldn’t enjoy the scenery with us." She handed them a map and watched as Frank practically dragged Joe from the room. "We have a job to do you know," Frank told his brother, "Vicki and C. J. are in trouble and you’re playing Casanova with the receptionist." "I was only trying to be nice," Joe protested, "It got us what we wanted, didn’t it?" "We already had a map," Frank said, "We just needed to know we were at the right place." "But now we have a map with a shortcut," Joe said, "Admit it, you need me around." He turned to Frank with a big grin. "Only so I don’t get stuck with all the chores," Frank replied, "But I have to admit, without you, life would get pretty dull. You’re the only form of entertainment I have all day. Hand me that map." Joe handed it over. Frank studied it for a minute and then glanced around the area. "We should head over that way," Frank finally spoke up, pointing off into the right side of the woods, "The shortcut is about two miles up the route. We should make it there in good time. The guys grabbed their packs and headed off in the direction Frank had pointed out. |
