Vicki looked out over the muddy ground,
looking for any sign of an unwanted person in the group. She and C. J.
had been taking extra precautions now that his guy wanted revenge more
than ever. Whoever this mystery person was, he seemed to know their every
move, which made the situation even more serious.
"I sure hope the guys arrive soon," Vicki whispered over to C. J. "Me too," C. J. replied, "I feel like they’re the only people we can trust right now. I hate to say it, but Kara seems like the most likely culprit." "I have to agree," Vicki said, "Either her or Brian. She’s been hanging around us a lot and Brian doesn’t trust us at all. I’m even beginning to suspect Steve. He’s awfully quiet around us." "He’s probably shy," C. J. said, "but I agree that we need to keep an eye on him. Anyway, I bet Frank and Joe are already on the first plane over here." "I’d rather have them here…now," Vicki admitted, "I know I don’t usually rely on them too much, but some guy is trying to kill us…and we’re in the middle of Maine’s woods…right near the…" She stopped short. "Near that one building," C. J. finished for her friend, understanding beginning to dawn on her face, "The one were we stopped that group of assassins. That explains everything. You don’t think they’re after us do you?" "It’s not them," Vicki said, "If it were them, everyone here would be dead already. It’s someone else entirely, and I have a good idea of who it is." "Okay everybody," Brian called out, "The rain has let up now, but it’s too late to go any further. Let’s set up camp on the driest ground possible and start out again in the morning." The girls realized that he was right. The sky was turning dark as he spoke.
"Are you sure this is the right direction," Joe asked his brother, hurrying to catch up. Frank didn’t answer, "You are the one with the map. Can you hear me?" "Yes, I can hear you," Frank answered, sounding slightly annoyed, "And yes, we’re headed in the right direction. I’m listening for any sign of people nearby. So be quiet." "All right, all right," Joe replied, "I was just asking a simple question, no reason to get mad at me." A few more minutes passed before they came within sight of a fire ahead. "That must be them," Frank said, "Come on, we’ll probably need to talk to the guy in charge." Upon getting closer, they recognized Vicki and C. J. among the people surrounding the flames. Brian stood up to greet them. "Hey," Joe called out, "I understand this is the hiking group that set out two days ago." "Yes it is," Brian replied, "I’m Brian Stevenson. You’re welcome to join us if you like." The guys looked up in time to catch Vicki and C. J. look at each other in astonishment, "Feel free to introduce yourselves around." Everyone quickly told the guys their names, Vicki and C. J. going last. Frank and Joe didn’t miss the sign that the girls wanted to meet with them later that night.
Hours later Frank, Joe, Vicki and C. J. exited their tents and met under the cliff where they had silently agreed to talk. "How did you guys get here so fast," Vicki asked, "It was a two day journey for us." "We took a shortcut," Joe explained, "Has anything else happened since you called?" "No," C. J. replied, "but that’s what scares us. He hasn’t done anything since this afternoon before we called. This guy is planning something, I can feel it." "He’s tried shooting at us, leaving us threatening notes…he even built a trap for a tree to fall over as we were going under it. We’ve been lucky so far," Vicki came in, "I have a feeling our luck is about to change." "Do you have any idea who this guy is," Frank asked. "Yeah," Vicki answered, "We do. Remember the first case we worked on together. C. J. and I have a reason to believe that building is nearby…and that one of those men has something to do with this." "And we can only think of one man," C. J. said, "His name is Jim Condo and he has a reason for wanting revenge on us. We destroyed his whole plot." "I remember that," Joe said, "Do you really think he’d go to this extreme to get you two killed?" "At this point, we’d be willing to believe anything," C. J. told them, "Problem is, someone in this group is spying for him. How else would every trap be timed perfectly?" "Good point," Frank agreed, but was almost immediately cut off. A low rumbling was heard overhead. All four teens looked up in time to see a pile of boulders headed straight for them! |
