During the hike, Kara and Steve Adams
joined their group. Vicki had been sure to make Kara promise not to say a
word about their current investigation to him. Kara had promised, but
hadn’t been happy with the fact that she had to keep it a secret from her
friend.
"So why did you come out here," Vicki asked Steve, "You don’t seem like the hiking type to me." "I’m not," Steve admitted, "I just needed a break from everything at school. This seemed like the best opportunity." "Is this your first time camping," C. J. questioned him. "No," Steve told her, "I’ve been before, but it has been a long time since I went last." The conversation lasted for a few more minutes, but they couldn’t get much out of him. The group went silent, not able to think of anything else to talk about. Soon, Steve joined the other guys at the front. "He doesn’t talk much, does he," Vicki asked Kara. "Not really," Kara answered, "He’s more reserved about everything. I can’t even get him to talk about his life anymore. Now that I think about it, I don’t know much about what’s been going on with him lately. I wonder why." C. J. shrugged in reply, "Who knows? Maybe he just doesn’t like talking about it. Some guys are like that. I don’t know many, but there are some." "All right," Brian called out from the front, "We’re going to take a break right up here. You have thirty minutes." "Kara," Frank suddenly said, "Why don’t you go talk to some people? See if they have noticed anything unusual happening around here." Kara immediately left. "What are we going to do then," Joe asked. Frank turned to look at him, "And don’t look at me. You’re the one who’s supposed to have all the plans." "I was getting to that," Frank said, "We’re going to talk to Brian. You never know, he might have something to do with this." "Why don’t you and Joe talk to him," Vicki suggested, "C. J. and I will be okay." "Yeah," C. J. agreed, "He doesn’t like us very much. It might be best if you handle it. Besides, we’ll be leaving in about fifteen minutes anyway." Frank and Joe walked away to talk to Brian. The girls looked at the crowd before them. "It’s so hard to think that one of these people is helping a killer," Vicki said, "We’ve learned to think of most of them as friends over these last few days." "I know what you mean," C. J. remarked, "I’m positive that it’s not Kara though. For once, I know what it feels to have a gut feeling about someone. I could see Brian being behind this, maybe even Steve, but not Kara." "And I thought I had all the gut feelings," Vicki said, "But I agree with you. Kara couldn’t be behind it. She’s too nice." "Either way," Vicki said, "We can’t ignore the fact that someone is tipping off Jim Condo." "We don’t know for certain that it’s Jim," C. J. reminded Vicki, "And for our sake, I hope it’s not. With our luck though, it will be." Kara approached them then. "I got nothing," she announced in a whisper, "No one here seems suspicious to me and they all claim that they didn’t hear anything last night. I’m sorry I couldn’t bring up a new lead." "It’s okay," C. J. told her, "The whole thing is kind of confusing too." "Can I ask you something," Kara asked. Vicki and C. J. nodded, "Who is Jim Condo? You mentioned him in your conversation earlier." Vicki and C. J. glanced over at each other. "I guess you deserve to know," Vicki finally said, "Jim Condo is a criminal we met on an earlier case." "Wait, wasn’t he that Doctor that disappeared about a month ago," Kara questioned. "That’s him," C. J. confirmed, "He faked his own disappearance and joined with a gang of criminals." "And he might be the man who is after us," Vicki finished, "We ruined his plot and he just might be out for revenge." "Remind me to never get into the detective business," Kara said, "I could never be able to handle that. So do you really think that it’s him?" "We believe so, even though we wish it wasn’t," Vicki said, "That’s why we need your help. We can’t entirely trust anyone else in the group." "Even Steve," Kara asked. The girls nodded, "Okay, I’ll go along with it, but I don’t think Steve is capable of something like this. He’s really a nice guy." She then walked away to see if she could find anything else out. "Even the nicest people can have a mean streak," Vicki said, turning to C. J, "We’ve discovered that many times before. Let’s hope that this time, it’s not the case." |
