Later that night, the group stopped at a clearing a few miles away. After everyone was asleep, Vicki, C. J, Kara, Frank and Joe met at a small spot away from the camp. They could easily see the site so they could be warned if Brian started getting everyone together.

"I don’t know what to do next," C. J. told everyone, "I haven’t seen anything since last night. It’s like he’s waiting for us to make a wrong move."

"How do we know if we make the wrong move," Vicki asked, "I believe he has something in mind to get rid of us and he’s going to act on it soon."

"Don’t forget that we were there too," Frank said, "Our appearance probably threw him off for a while. He has more targets now."

"What about me," Kara asked, "Am I a target now that I’m helping you out?"

"I doubt it," Vicki answered, "He’s trying to get revenge. He’s not going to worry about you getting in the way of his plan."

"You should be careful anyway though," C. J. told her, "If they find you to be a obstacle, you might become a target yourself."

"Okay, why am I just hearing this now," Kara asked, "Couldn’t you have given me a warning earlier?"

"Guess we kind of forgot," Vicki said, "It comes with the job for us. I mean, this is a major part of our lives. It’s just what we do."

The explanation did little to reassure Kara that she wasn’t a potential target…at least for the moment. As much as she had heard about the girls from Justin and Joe, the reality of it was hard to grasp. Kara never knew that she would have a chance to be in that very position.

"It’s okay," Kara finally said, "I’m not as used to this as you are. It’s understandable." The others smiled in thankfulness that their new friend didn’t have a problem with their methods.

"I’m sure you’re safe anyway," C. J. told her, "I don’t think you’ll have a thing to worry about. We only want your help, but don’t want to make it more dangerous than it really is. You don’t know Jim Condo like we do."

"Which really isn’t very much," Vicki said, starting to laugh a little, "In between him trying to kill us those times, it gets to be pretty tough to know a guy." It was true. The only way they had known he was involved was by a picture found in one of the labs. Otherwise, they might not have known that he existed. Explosions set off by other members of his team had become very close to killing them in the end.

"I can imagine," Kara replied, "but I really don’t want to. I Hopefully, this will be as close as I come to any danger."

Frank glanced back at the camp, "We’d better be getting back soon. Brian is probably getting suspicious of us already." The teens ended their conversation and headed back to camp.

Brian had promised earlier that there was a chance of good weather the next day. He was even planning on taking them rock-climbing if at all possible. As of right then, everything looked perfect for the following day’s activities.

"We’ll be close by in case you two need us okay," Joe asked, pointing out their tent, "We don’t know what this guy might try next."

"Thanks Joe," Vicki said, "We’ll let you know if anything comes up, okay?" The guys nodded and went over to their own tent. The three girls separated, Vicki and C. J. going one way and Kara another.

"There’s one good thing to having you as a roommate," Vicki commented once they got inside.

"What’s that," C. J. asked.

"Neither of us can wake up and find the other missing," Vicki answered, "We always leave together."

"True," C. J. agreed, "but there are some bad points. For instance, you snore." Vicki looked at her friend in disbelief, astonished that she would say that.

"I do not," she protested, "You could sleep through a hurricane anyway. I don’t snore and you know it."

"Okay," C. J. answered, "I could think of worse anyway." Vicki, not wanting to hear anymore, flung a pillow at C. J.

"Go to sleep," Vicki ordered. C. J. laughed at Vicki and went to bed.

A few hours later, C. J. woke up slowly. Something did not seem right. Opening her eyes, she quickly saw what it was. She turned to Vicki, who still appeared to be asleep.

"Vicki," she asked, shaking her friend, "Vicki wake up. Hurry!"

"What’s going on," Vicki asked.

"Just get up," C. J. demanded, "The tent’s on fire!" Sure enough, a thick blanket of smoke had seeped inside and flames were slowly engulfing the tent.
