Ezra Collig sat silently while Frank Hardy presented the reasons why he wanted the police to go back to Greta’s gym and go through it with a fine toothcomb. Fenton also listened, his face giving nothing away. Joe kept his eyes on his brother’s face, his expression one of complete faith that Frank would be able to convince the chief that another search was justified. Collig had seen the Hardy boys dig their heels in before when on a case. This time it was going to be worse turning them down because the case was personal. As Frank finished, Collig cleared his throat.

‘Frank, I’m impressed by your ability to scratch together some clues, but there really isn’t enough to justify searching the gym. That poor woman has only just re-opened. We searched that place thoroughly after each disappearance. Joe, we might never know what happened to you. Sometimes that’s just the way things go.’

Fenton saw the mixture of disappointment and indignation on his older son’s face. He had warned the boys that Collig might decide this way.

‘Ezra,’ Fenton began, ‘three people disappear from the same building, Joe recalls being looked after well besides being kept drugged, and he also remembers smelling Greta’s perfume while missing. Surely that’s worth another look.’

‘I’m sorry Fenton, boys. You’ll have to give me more. She wouldn’t be the only woman to wear that perfume. In the mean time, you have Joe back safe and sound. We are all thankful for that.’

Joe stood up, his face slightly flushed. ‘That’s fine for you to say,’ he said bitterly, ‘but how would you like to know you were drugged up to the eyeballs for three days, kept blind-folded and have no idea what was done to you?’

He stormed out of the office. Fenton looked at Collig only half apologetically.

‘Joe’s understandably upset, Ezra,’ he said. ‘If the boys come up with more, I expect you will reconsider?’

‘Definitely,’ said Collig earnestly.

On the way out to the car, Fenton spoke seriously to Frank.

‘Keep digging around, by all means, son,’ he said, ‘but I don’t want you going near that gym or taking unnecessary risks. I would also appreciate it if you could try and calm your brother down. He’s not going to help the situation by flying off the handle at the chief of police!’

Frank nodded, still quietly seething at Collig’s lack of co-operation.

Joe was waiting by the car, arms folded. The drive back home was tense. Fenton looked in the rear view mirror at the intense look in Joe’s eyes. A sideways glance at the firmly set jaw of his older son confirmed that there was no way his boys would be letting this case rest!
