It was midnight before Frank Hardy finally sat in the darkened family room of their house to quietly contemplate what had happened. His father had gone through the gym with a fine toothcomb and come up with nothing. Frank had gone with Biff and his father to the police station to make a statement. Greta had eventually answered her pager and arrived in a near hysterical state at the police station. She was closing the gym until further notice and had to be comforted by Fenton, a fact that Frank found ironic given that it was Fenton’s son who had gone missing! Biff had kept blaming himself for the whole thing and had offered to drive the streets of Bayport with Frank to look for Joe. Fenton insisted he go home and try to sleep, assuring him that he shouldn’t blame himself. Laura Hardy, understandably, had been inconsolable. She had alternately rebuked her husband for involving the boys in the first place and wept in his arms. Finally she had taken a sleeping tablet on Fenton’s insistence and gone to bed. Fenton was in his office ringing any contact he thought might be able to search for Joe.

Frank knew that if he didn’t focus on the facts of the case and try to solve it, he would go crazy imagining his brother in trouble. If his head were able to take control rather than his heart, he would get through this.

Jake continued to work at the gym and had contact with all three missing instructors. All three victims were physically strong. If they had to be overpowered, Jake would certainly be capable of it. Kristine was a chatty client who had managed to form friendships with all three victims, including his brother who he had seen with her in the gym café. Greta hired all three instructors and had access to the gym at all times. But what possible motive could any of these three people have? And where were Joshua, Steve and Joe? Frank rubbed his eyes. There had to be a link.

He softly made his way up to his bedroom and switched on the desk lamp. From a file he pulled out the photographs of Joshua and Steve and placed them on the desk. Next he moved the framed photo of Joe and himself from the bedside table and put it next to the photo’s on the desk. Frank immediately realized that the picture of himself stood out in stark contrast to the other three. All three missing young men were white-blonde, blue eyed, and fresh faced. All three had perfectly even, white teeth and no blemishes. Joe was the youngest but Steve and Joshua had youthful faces. But what did this mean? Frank’s eyes rested on the sparkling eyes of his brother. The photograph had been taken a month before the car bomb explosion. Iola had taken the picture at Phil Cohen’s birthday party. Frank hadn’t really wanted to have his photo taken but Joe had exuberantly grabbed hold of him and pulled him towards the camera. Both of them were laughing. Staring at the photograph and thinking back to happier times Frank became aware of tears filling his eyes. Touching the image of his brother’s sunny face he whispered a solemn promise:

"I’ll find you little brother."

He turned off the lamp and lay down holding the photograph close to his chest.

Meanwhile, in another dark room, Joe Hardy awoke to realise he was bound, blindfolded and gagged. He appeared to be lying on an inflatable mattress. He felt a little dizzy from the residual effects of the chloroform that had knocked him out. He listened intently for sounds around him. All was silent. He tried to sit up but found this difficult with his wrists and ankles bound. He finally managed to get into a sitting position but again he found himself subjected to a towel full of chloroform and plunged back into nothingness. The last thing he remembered was the feeling of arms lowering him gently onto the mattress and his gag being loosened.
