Frank had text messaged Joe at midnight to say that the evening had been ‘fruitful’ and that he, Biff and Joe would get together over the weekend. He had also left a message for his Dad with slightly more detail. He highlighted Caroline’s theory that it was unlikely any students at the school were involved. The boys spent a relaxing weekend ‘hanging out’ at the apartment. Joe went out for a pizza and some late night tagging with AJ and a couple of his friends, but the rest of the weekend was uneventful. Mid afternoon, on their second Monday at Thomson High, Frank received a telephone call from his father. He listened in disbelief to what Fenton was telling him. Frank’s eyes widened. Frank: ‘Absolutely not, Dad!’ Fenton: ‘Son, it’s not ideal, but Chief Black has already made the arrangements. You and Joe haven’t been able to come up with any suspects. We need to try and flush some out. We’re running out of time.’ Frank: But we had all weekend to plan this! If Joe knew about it, I’d be fine with it! Fenton: Chief Black presented the idea to us this morning and has already put his men in place. He happened to have all the resources he needed this morning, so it’s been given the green light. Frank: ‘But we’ve practically ruled some people out, and we have some new leads to follow up! What difference will one more day make? We can do it tomorrow!’ Fenton: ‘You don’t have a choice Frank. It has already been decided and arranged. You go in half an hour.’ Frank: ‘How could agree to this?! Didn’t you explain anything to them?’ Fenton: ‘Frank, the plan was designed by the three of us, but Black decided on the details. I expressed my reservations, but in a couple of hours you’ll be able to explain everything.’ Frank: ‘Reservations!’ Fenton: ‘It’ll be okay, Frank.’ Frank: ‘I’m not doing it.’ Fenton: ‘Frank, you don’t have a choice and you’re wasting time. No-one is going to get hurt. If you don’t do it, it will still happen, but it won’t have half the effect. Son, I know why you’re reluctant, but it’ll be okay.’ Frank: ‘It better be!’
Frank hung up and leaned heavily against the brick wall. His mind and his heart were racing. He looked at his watch. He had ten minutes to make an excuse to Ferguson and ring Biff. He began to dial Joe’s number, but then remembered students were not allowed to have their mobiles in class. ‘Damn!’ he cursed. He had no time to locate Joe Hooper and invent a reason to speak to him.
