CHAPTER 16

Frank Hardy climbed wearily out of the front seat of Chet’s 4WD and stretched his arms up above his head. It felt good to be standing up after the long, arduous drive through the forest. While it had been very kind of Chet to drive them into the forest to a suitable campsite, Chet drove his vehicle in the same way he drove it around the Morton farm; with no regard for the comfort of the passengers!

As Callie, Vanessa, Joe and Chet also left the vehicle, there were appreciative comments made about the choice of campsite.

‘This is SO beautiful,’ enthused Vanessa. ‘The tree canopy is so dense I can barely see the sky in some places!’

Callie took a deep breath and exhaled.

‘The air is DIVINE!’ she added. ‘So pure and fresh.’

Joe Hardy, his hands on his hips, surveyed the site.

‘This is a perfect spot to put up the tents,’ he agreed. ‘And there’ll be plenty of room left over for a bit of kick-to-kick.’

‘Oh no there wont,’ Callie told him. ‘We all agreed that this camping trip would be spent doing things that Vanessa and I have organized. We’ve got some great games and activities organized for us to play altogether. You and Frank spend more than enough time playing sports, watching sports and disappearing off the face of the Earth to solve mysteries.’

Joe put his arm around Vanessa and rested his head on her shoulder.

‘Come on, Ness,’ he coaxed, using his most charming tone. ‘You and Cal won’t mind if we have a bit of a kick, and maybe a run, and maybe…’

‘Now, Joe Hardy,’ Callie admonished him, as Frank and Chet looked on, amused. ‘You might well make Vanessa go all weak at the knees, but this is something you agreed to and you’re going to stick to it!’

Vanessa smiled as her boyfriend adopted a hurt expression. She knew Joe was probably just teasing Callie. If the truth were known, Vanessa wouldn’t care what Frank and Joe got up to during the camping trip. As long as she was with Joe, she was happy! But Callie had very definite ideas about what she wanted them to be doing on the long weekend, and Vanessa didn’t want to upset her friend.

‘It’ll be fine,’ Vanessa told Joe, soothingly. ‘You’ll have fun!’

‘Yeah,’ added Chet, who was starting to get some of the camping gear out. ‘You might actually enjoy some of the stuff the girls have organized for you and Frank.’

‘Maybe you’re right Chet,’ said Joe, his tone suddenly more enthusiastic. ‘I might be pleasantly surprised. Let the games begin!’ He slid his arms around Vanessa’s waist and looked at her with a very suggestive twinkle in his blue eyes. Vanessa blushed fiercely but smiled as Joe kissed her on the cheek.

Callie rolled her eyes in exasperation and turned her attention to unpacking.

‘Come on Cassanova,’ Frank laughed, dragging Joe away from Vanessa by the arm. ‘We have a couple of tents to set up.’

…….

About an hour after their arrival, the group had set up the campsite, including two tents and a fire for warmth and for cooking. It was Friday evening. The plan was for Callie, Vanessa, Frank and Joe to spend the long weekend camping in a reasonably isolated spot in the forest. The plan had been formulated the weekend before. After a hectic few weeks and a case requiring the boys going undercover, both couples were in need of ‘quality time’ together.

‘Let’s go somewhere where there are no other people around,’ suggested Callie to Frank. ‘That way, they’ll be no way you guys will get asked to solve a mystery or rescue anyone!’

Frank smiled. He was looking forward to spending time with his girlfriend and was pretty much ready to agree to any suggestion she made. He knew that Callie would have preferred to spend the weekend JUST with him, but had not made a fuss when he had proposed that Vanessa and Joe join them. He had pointed out to her that there would be plenty of opportunities for him and Callie to be alone together over the course of the trip. And he knew that Callie really enjoyed Vanessa’s company.

‘We could go camping,’ suggested Frank. ‘It won’t cost anything. We’ve got all the gear.’

‘Yes!’ said Callie enthusiastically. ‘Let’s go to Black’s Forest. Chet could drive us there on the Saturday and come back Monday morning.’

‘Let’s get him to drive us in Friday night,’ said Frank, putting his arm around her. ‘Three nights and two days with you sounds great.’

Callie snuggled up to Frank and sighed happily.

‘I can’t wait,’ she told him. ‘I’ll get together with Vanessa tomorrow and do some planning.’

Frank kissed the top of her head, enjoying the closeness. He was glad that Joe had taken Vanessa out to the movies and left Frank to watch a video on the couch with Callie. Not that Joe would be seeing much of the film, he thought with a smile. He was rapt that Vanessa and Callie were becoming such good friends. He knew that before Vanessa and Joe had started to date, Iola’s absence had been sharply felt by Callie, and Joe had probably felt like the ‘third wheel’. This ‘double date’ camping trip would hopefully be an event that all four of them would reminisce about in years to come.

Once the campsite had been set up, the five teenagers stood around and admired their work.

‘Are you heading back now, or are you going to stay for dinner and a game?’ Vanessa asked Chet.

Joe laughed out aloud.

‘Vanessa, you’re actually ASKING Chet if he wants to eat!? Is the Pope a Catholic? Of course he’s staying to eat!’

‘Yeah, count me in,’ agreed Chet amiably,’ Although I don’t know if I’ve got time to stay for a game. I don’t want to get back too late.’

Joe shook his head, vigorously.

‘No, no my friend,’ he said seriously, ‘The ‘game’ part of Vanessa’s offer is not separate to the invitation to stay for dinner. Not negotiable. Besides,’ he told his friend quietly, making sure Callie was out of earshot, ‘if Frank and I have to suffer a whole weekend of Callie’s games, you can sit through at least ONE!
